    Sorry to go off topic there, feel free to clean up these posts Arris if you feel it necessary 🙂 While I’m on that note though, my e-mail notifications direct me to a https:// version of the domain here, but the certificate appears to be expired or invalid – I had to manually change it to a standard http. Might want to look into that, it could confuse a lot of your thread subscribers!

    Well Arris and myself use the forums with SSL (https://) so I would assume that Arris didn’t change notification e-mails to not use SSL links. Firefox accepts the certificate the first time and it doesn’t bother you again, but IE bugs you everytime. When we post links on the forums, we use the [localurl] tag so any user, on SSL or not, will open links in their security level.

    Example:

    [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1088]Your Topic[/localurl]

    Would turn out to look like this:

    [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1088:20efggaa]Your Topic[/localurl:20efggaa]

    For non-SSL, the link would link you to:

    http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1088

    But for SSL would, the link would link you to:

    https://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1088

    The reason why the Certificate is showing up as invalid is because the certificate is signed to Arris’ host, not the Win2008[R2]Workstation.com or something like that, Arris should be able to explain it better 😉

    Welcome back to the forums anyways.

    That movie looks already way better then the one I recorded using the VMWare Movie recording feature! You can test whether it works better if you record it from the Virtual Machine itself. At least you should then give the VM the maximum amount of RAM and all cores of the CPU so it has the best possible performance.

    Okay I’ll make one from the VM and see if it’s different. The last video was only a bit laggy because it only had 1280MB of RAM and it’s in a VM so it is always a bit slow. I just have to find out how much RAM to use so it won’t freeze – 2.4GB of ~2.8GB (“3GB”) freezes the host [Vista] so I might drop it down. It says not to use over half of your total RAM or whatever so I will try around half (usually I have it at 1GB or 1280MB – it was 1280 on the last video).

    Here is a test video taken from the guest OS (R2) with Camtasia Studio at 1280MB of RAM. I think recording from the host is better because then the guest has more of its own RAM to use for processing.

    I don’t think that will have much effect. It is better to have something like a mandatory step in the registration process or when posting their first post where people have to review the rules page first before they will be able to post something. I ‘ll look if there is an easy way to implement something like this soon.

    The only thing I can think of is to have it on the registration screen included with the PHPBB terms if possible. I have PHPBB and Simple Machines forums on my localhost on my laptop for testing purposes/etc (Simple Machines is slightly different – PHPBB is more clear and efficient) and I’m not sure if you can change the PHPBB one via the ACP (you may have to edit the actual file 😐 ). I’m pretty sure Simple Machines (SMF) lets you so I’ll see where that option is located in SMF and then see if I can find a similar one in PHPBB.

    By doing a Google search for “Change PHPBB Terms” I found this page: http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/changing-the-registration-agreement/ You would have to be able to edit the board’s files though if you were to do that. I’ll try and think of another idea, unless you can find a way to have it show the rules upon posting for the first (couple) times [maybe the first 3-5 posts?] or something like you said.

    I also tweaked the [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=23&t=969&p=4641#p4641:2fyqcu0o]rules[/localurl:2fyqcu0o] a bit:

    Before Warez/etc was rule #6 but I changed it to Rule #1 and moved spam to 6. I also added the word “Activators” because before it read:

    No posting links to Warez, Cracks, or any other form of illegal material.

    and I guess some users either didn’t read the rules or thought Activators and Warez/Cracks/Illegal material were different. Apparently we didn’t have the word “discussion” in there so I added that and I also put the rule in bold and underlined the main words:

    @Rules wrote:

    1) No posting links or discussion of Warez, Activators, Cracks, or any other form of illegal material.

    Hopefully this will stop users from discussing cracks.

    Perhaps you could add a link to the Forum Rules where it has the links to the Win2008Workstation.com and Win2008r2workstation.com sites? Just a thought to get more people to read the rules even though there is over 1000 views of that topic 😉

    So it would say something like this:

    HomePage of Windows Server 2008 R2 to Workstation
    Go to the Main page of Win2008r2workstation.com

    HomePage of Windows Server 2008 to Workstation
    Go to the Main page of Win2008workstation.com

    [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=1&t=969:2fyqcu0o]Forum Rules[/localurl:2fyqcu0o]
    Make sure you read these rules before posting on the forum.

    This works to get InkBall working on Windows Server 2008 R2, just extract the zip and then launch the EXE: http://thetechcorner.net/2009/01/11/inkball-on-windows-7/

    It might be because I am creating a video of an Aero-enabled workstation, but that’s just a thought…

    It may have been laggy when I recorded but I could have edited that so it looks like there is none 🙄

    Here is a test video I recorded with Camtasia Studio recording from the host (Vista); it seems to be a bit laggy, but that is why we have editing tools! I have not tested with Camtasia installed in the VM to see if it makes a difference.

    It’s always good to have some competition on the market! 🙂

    Indeed, I think it’s better to have choices, like Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 workstation 😉

    in reply to: What are the advantages of using R2 as a workstation? #49969

    @naisanza wrote:

    My question is, why it is advantageous to use Windows Server OS as a workstation.

    Well you can read the Why Should I use a Server OS as a workstation from the R1 Manual.

    My initial impression is that there is practically nothing installed, which is a good thing.

    Yes, one downside is that having nothing installed means some compatibility issues, etc. but that is what this website is for!

    I am wondering, in terms of benchmarks, how much more improvement do you see using R2 x64 than Vista x64.

    Well as Windows Server 2008 R2 is based on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 is based on Vista, you get a more advanced OS if you use R2 rather than Vista.

    I will add more as I can think of it, I’m in a bit of a hurry but this should answer some of your questions a bit. Other members will be able to give you their opinions too! 🙂

    We are trying to get them to work on Server 2008 R2… they are included in Windows 7.. 😐

    When I had Workstation 6.5.3 installed the video was fine I’m pretty sure. I might try with Camtasia Studio or another recording program and see what the result is.

    I like how they advertise VMware Player:

    Better than Windows XP Mode

    😛

    As Windows Server 2008 R2 is based on Windows 7, you should try the 7 drivers, if not – then try Vista.

    You are looking the the wrong forum – try the Windows Server 2008 R2 Wish List forum, there is a topic there.

    Wow, good news!
    Does it also support DirectX/OpenGL apps (like games)?

    Well here is the feature list:

    Feature Highlights:

    • The ability to create Virtual Machines
    • Aero support for Windows 7 and Windows Vista guests!!!
    • OpenGL support for Windows guests (give Google Earth a try!)
    • New User Interface including a Virtual Machine Library
    • Windows 7 support (as a Host and Guest OS)
    • Automatically download and install the latest VMware Tools package
    • Multiple Monitor Support
    • Print from your VM without installing printer drivers. Virtual Printing courtesy of our friends at ThinPrint.
    • ALSA Sound support on Linux hosts enables multiple VMs to play “music” concurrently
    • VIX API support will let our coding fans write applications that can interact with their VMs

    I haven’t tested it for games yet but I might try one when I get back home.

    This thread is encountering problems with SecondLife, but I’m not sure how intense the graphics in that game are, etc. I will do some tests when I have time.

    EDIT: The final versions of the latest VMware products have been released.

    What about one for AVG 9.0? It’s released already. I tried using the manual method on the other thread, which worked for 8.5, but not 9.0. Thanks in advance!

    As you can see from the [r2security:2cdfu2mu]R2 Security Software[/r2security:2cdfu2mu] page, the tweak does not work for the 9.x version of AVG as they changed the installer.

    Just a note to anyone who is looking to use a Virtual Machine with Server in it, the latest versions of VMware’s products (Workstation, Player, etc) support Aero so that may be a good alternative for some people. I am currently using VMware Player 3.0 RC and it seems stable, and it’s free. Previous versions didn’t let you create new VMs but this release does so anyone who wants a free alternative to VMware Workstation (or other virtualization software) for their Virtual Machines might want to try the player. This way you do not need to use Remote Desktop if you are using a VM. For those who still need to use RDC because they need to connect to an actual PC, we still do not have a solution so if anyone has any ideas, feel free to post them.
