    Nice! I also always love it to get new computer stuff! :geek: Why can’t you just download the iso in the coming 2900 / ((280 * 60 * 60) / 1024) β‰ˆ 3 hours? Your speed isn’t that slow?

    When you put it that way, it does seem a lot faster, so maybe I’ll download it tonight when no one needs my old computer, or maybe right now as no one is using it… hmm…

    [s:349cbqa4]EDIT: If I use a download calculator, it says 25 hours, then again, I may be looking at the wrong column.. so does the download page with that estimtated time[/s:349cbqa4] MS’s download manager says about 3.5 hours, so that’s not bad.

    It’s possible to create a usb-stick using the following tutorial: Kevin’s Blog – Creating Bootable Vista / Windows 7 USB Flash Drive.

    I’ll probably just put it in a VM for now, even though I do have 8 blank DVDs left. Do you know how to enable Aero in a VM, and what virtualization software do you recommend?

    @Arris wrote:

    btw. Your signature says you have 3GB of ram, but isn’t that just because you are using a 32bit Operating System? If I look at the specs at this Dutch website it looks like there is 4GB of ram in it, but it might be that you have a slightly different version.

    It says on the laptop 3gb (and in it). But now that I look closer, mine says: Acer Aspire AS5536-5255, so it is slightly different.

    Okay, I’m downloading the 2.79GB ISO now… I’m now at 7% @ ~240kb/s… 11%.. this is pretty fast

    Ahh, that sucks! You were so delighted that you finally get your laptop, but at the last moment they delay that moment! πŸ˜₯ πŸ˜‰

    Okay, I am on it right now! Although it is only Vista at the moment. I will download R2 within the next few weeks (hopefully). Do you have to burn the ISO or is there a workaround of just booting from the ISO? My download speed [wireless] is 280 kb/s which is about 50-75 kb then my old computer on wired! πŸ˜€ I am at [s:3avmo8u8]4/5[/s:3avmo8u8] 5/5 bars where i am now. I should test the old computer and see if the router sped it up,

    It’s getting bigger and bigger indeed! πŸ™‚ However I think we have to clean-up the user-database sometime, for example to delete all users that joined before December 2008 and logged in for the last time in December 2008 and have 0 posts.

    I was bored sometime last week so I went through the members (sorted by post count) and I found that about 60% of registered users have 0 posts. πŸ™„

    First of all: the topic is getting better and better and it’s very clear! Good job! πŸ™‚ About the localurl-tag problem: after you reported it I also noticed it and it’s weird indeed. I’ll take a look at it this weekend to see if I can solve it.

    I’m trying to get everything that I can think of in there so it is more useful. I wasn’t sure if it was just something I screwed up on or not, so I tryed it a few more times, even using the list tags and it still didn’t work.

    Sorry for any typos, I am still getting used to this MacBook-like keyboard.

    I’m assuming you’ve done this and are wondering why before you logon that the Aero Cursors aren’t there right away?

    When you logon, Windows loads your personal settings – wallpaper, screensaver, theme, cursors. As what you did in the above tutorial was change it for your account, that is the only place you will use the cursors. For example: I am using XP and I have the Vista Aero cursors installed (and Mac OS X ones too) and when I logon, it will say “Loading your personal settings…” and then my mouse will change.

    There really is no reason for that less than 60 seconds logon time that you need the Aero cursors until you actually logon.

    If you REALLY wanted to have the Aero Cursors, see if this works:

    1) Download a .zip file with the cursors in it (if the tutorial include them, then you’re fine, if not, Google for them)
    2) Extract them somewhere (such as C:WindowsCursorsAero)
    3) Open up the Mouse Applet in Control Panel, click the Cursor tab.
    4) Find the scheme with the standard (non-aero) cursors.
    5) Go through and replace each one with its Aero counterpart.
    6) Save the scheme with the same name.
    7) Restart or Logoff your computer.

    No need to backup as the normal cursors are still on your computer.

    Hope this helps.

    Firefox is especially bad with that because it is all in one process so it will crash all your tabs if you have to end its process because it froze. On this computer I have 256MB of RAM and Firefox can use 117MB+ sometimes 😐

    Glad to here you are loving R2!

    So this Classic Start Menu is free? Good to know. I found a blog post that mentioned one, but you have to pay for it, so this would be better if it was free.

    I most likely will be getting my laptop today and I will be installing R2 on it so then I can enjoy it too!

    Thanks for the update. It’s a shame that DreamSpark keys don’t work.

    Do you have the “Desktop Experience” enabled? Re-read the second part of my post above and see if what I said helps. I edited it as you were posting so you may not have seen it.

    If you are using IE, did you do this? http://www.win2008r2workstation.com/win2008r2/disable-internet-explorer-enhanced-security It may help, I don’t know.

    So how would I locate a shadow copy and run it?

    As I said before, I don’t have Windows Server installed but try reading this and see if it helps. Look at the sites under References and External Links for more information.

    And would you happen to know why server uses so much core and freezes music and videos? I’m currently on it now and it was just freezing my youtube.

    What browser + plugins do you have installed? Remember that Windows Server 2008 R2 is 64-bit so plugins (such as flash) will not work in the 64-bit version of a browser (unless there is a beta, then that may be unstable). You could also install Shockwave and see if that works. That is what I had to do when I wanted to run Mozilla Firefox 3.6 “Minefield” so it may help.

    in reply to: System Restore #49516

    Apparently there is no System Restore feature in a Windows Server OS. Here is a workaround someone did for Windows Small Business Server 2003 that you may be able to implement in Windows Server 2008 R2 somehow. I currently don’t have Windows Server 2008 R2 installed right now, so I cannot confirm nor deny any of the above.

    I also found this and its response is here. The link in the response says to look at the end of the article which says:

    @http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926185 wrote:

    Although Windows Server 2008 does not include the System Restore feature, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 use shadow copies for other purposes, such as for backups. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 also delete shadow copies that are created by earlier versions of Windows. Therefore, after you use the earlier version of Windows to start the computer in a dual-boot environment, no restore points are available to the System Restore feature when you next start Windows Vista.

    Even though that was R1, it probably hasn’t changed.

    It has alot of possibilities. I would encourage MS to do this and put it to practice!

    There’s always Service Pack 1 if it is not already incorporated πŸ˜‰ Or is SP0 first (if that exists)?

    What is Windows Server 2008 R2’s build string anyways? Windows 7 is 7600.16399.win7_gdr.090722-1835.

    I moved this to the Feedback forum because it is regarding the manual. πŸ˜›

    As for when Arris will update them, he was on about an hour ago, but he also told me on August 29th:

    @Arris wrote:

    Coming Monday my holiday period is over so I expect to spend less time to the website during the week. In the weekends I’ll try to get everything up-to-date again!

    so I am not sure exactly when Arris will have time to update those, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was done within the next 24-48 hours. πŸ˜‰

    The new month has started so you can download it now! πŸ˜‰ But it sucks to have a download limit. Here in the Netherlands we have 20Mbit (2,04MB/s) for €25,- and don’t have any download limit because it’s the 21st century! πŸ˜› In Belgium and many other country the also still have limits of ~20GB and it sucks big time! πŸ˜•

    [s:39xy0t5y]I think I am getting my laptop tomorrow.[/s:39xy0t5y] They were out of stock! It should be in by friday so I’ll check then and let you know. So at the moment, I physically own: a laptop mouse, a laptop cooling pad, a wireless router and some blank DVDs. I payed for the laptop, it’s just not physically here yet. πŸ˜›

    That sounds way better than what I have. I think my month ends on the 3rd and starts on the 4th for some reason. [s:39xy0t5y]I'll probably split it (pause download manager) so I have more bandwidth to download the AV programs next month ;)[/s:39xy0t5y] There goes that plan πŸ™„

    Actually I can go over the limit, it just costs $2 /GB which isn’t that bad. Hey, a $999+ Operating System for $4? I can live with that πŸ˜‰

    @Arris wrote:

    Yeah, that’s right but you first had to install the certificate in order to get SSL. If the hostname in de SSL Certificate matches the one you are visiting you won’t have to install it first in order to use it.

    I swear there is about 7-10 new users every day on these forums. 😎

    EDIT: I’ve updated my [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=23&t=969:39xy0t5y]topic[/localurl:39xy0t5y] from earlier so it is more multi-forum, but for some reason the table of contents isn’t letting me use the localurl tags twice πŸ˜• Could you try and see if it works for you? Do the “anchor” tags work on these forums? They’d probably be better for a table of contents. This is what I get when I try to use the localurl tags in the Table:

    Seeing as we do not have product keys for Windows Server 2008 R2 (unless you’re MSDN/TechNet), we cannot fully confirm that, but based on the post you linked to, I would have to say that it is possible, especially since one of Microsoft’s Moderators marked those as answers.

    If you want to confirm this, contact the Windows Server 2008 R2 team and ask them.

    When I get my laptop I’m going to try and test more anti-viruses in VMs and such and then I’ll add my results to the page.

    Sounds good! πŸ™‚ Let’s make the list as big as the current Windows Server 2008 list! When do you get your new laptop? πŸ™‚

    Well I was a bit busy to get it today, so I’m hoping within the next week. Plus I also have to download the 2.9GB ISO from Microsoft via their download manager, so that may take a long time, my average download speed is 200-300KB/s, that’s via ethernet, probably less with wireless. I just have a 20GB download/upload month limit and I’m at ~16GB/20 right now but if I get my laptop this weekend, I’ll be on a new month so I’ll see.

    @xxcom9a wrote:

    Well the rule I’ve been using is mainly based on what I’ve seen happen at other forums:

    • If I read a topic and find that there is nothing more to add, I close it.
    • If someone bumps an old topic, I’ll close it unless their addition is extremely good that it adds perfectly and that a new conversation can be started based on it, or I’ll ask them to start a new topic.
    • If the original poster edits their first/last post with “Mods you may closes this.” or if they edit the title of their topic to be “Close please” or if they add that to the beginning/end of the title so it looks like [close] –.

    We can work out a better way in the future.

    These are indeed good rules to stick to.

    I will continue to follow them then.

    @xxcom9a wrote:

    As for improving the tables on the manuals, I created a topic that has instructions on how users can report problems with the tables should I make them. You can edit it if you want, and add a link on the tables pages so people know. I just find it easier if the feedback is on the forums rather than on the tables’ pages as I check the forums daily, and not the tables pages unless I need to update them. I made that topic “Global” just in case people aren’t sure where to put that feedback, they’ll see it wherever they are in the forums. Did you prefer if this was just a sticky in the Feedback forum?

    Very good summary! Maybe you can also merge Triel’s Rule-posts with yours so we make one common topic about the forum/feedback rules where you also include the rules you mentioned about bumping up topics etc. Making it global then is fine because it applies to all different forums.

    I’ll take a look around the forums for them and merge them. Where would I look for them?

    Btw. In the Webhosting Management Software “Plesk” it was possible to create a new certificate but I was unable to use it because of the shared hosting. It turns out that only one certificate may be applied to one ip-address so we can’t get rid of the security warning.

    it seems only if someone uploads an image from imageshack or another upload site that I get a secure+non-secure warning.

    About the urls to forum-topics: You can use the tag localurl to point to a topic on the forum, e.g.:

    [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=8&t=969]Feedback[/localurl]

    This will make it a relative url where it doesn’t matter whether you are using an encrypted connection or not.

    That’ll only work if I am linking on the forums. If I need to reference a topic in the table, I’d have to use the full link right?

    Also, congratulations with your birthday ❗ What age did you get? :)[/quote]

    Thanks. I’m now 15 which is why I only know a limited amount of programming.

    Well there goes my plan of adding a workstation directory containing Arris’ “patches” if it doesn’t allow editing. Maybe it was just your compressor. You could just write the key on the disc.
