Are they both completely fresh, brand new installs? Or have you had Vista installed for some time, then decided to try Server 2008? If this is the case, then it would definately be the fact that Superfetch on the Vista system has a well-established database of all dll’s and programs and all that, whereas the Server 2008 is still ‘learning’ your computer habits. Apart from that, yeah I agree with everyone else – no idea 😛

I can tell you now though, I have an old P4 Prescott [with HT] at 3GHz and only 1GB of DDR420 RAM and a GeForce 7300GT on this PC; and Server 2008 is so much faster than Vista it just aint funny 😛

Plus, is it just me – or is Server 2008 a HELL of a lot more stable than Vista!?!? I don’t think explorer.exe has crashed ONCE since i installed 2008 a few weeks ago, whereas Vista would happen twice a week on average… hehe!

Steve, did you have any luck? If not, it sounds like there is a problem with the ACPI compliancy on your system. Check the following –

    1. Go to your Device Manager. If you don’t know how, hit WINKEY+R [Run Box] and type in “devmgmt.msc” and hit ENTER/OK
    2. Under the tree entry labelled as “Computer”, press the arrow to expand it and make a note of that entry. It varies depending on your architecture,
but should say something like “ACPI x86-based PC” or similar. ACPI is they key term you are looking for – let us know what is under the ‘Computer’ entry if its different.

If it is ACPI or whatever, check your BIOS settings > Power Management [or similar] and make SURE it is on S3, also known as STR mode [S1/POS mode will not do]. There are also settings in some BIOS’s that allow you to actually enable or disable ACPI and/or Advanced Power Management [APM].

If that still doesnt fix it, download your latest Chipset drivers for your mainboard. Get the Vista ones. If you need more help, please let us know – also, if you can provide your MOTHERBOARD model that would help.

Oh and don’t worry, its a much less n00b question than you think! Also, did Hibernate work previously on Vista or XP? If you can please give details on your PC specs [mainboard/motherboard and CPU will be fine]. You might need a BIOS update, but we shouldnt jump to that conclusion yet. Peace.

Hmm, i’ve never actually used a Microsoft Media Center application at all, never even touched Windows XP MCE or anything like that haha! But fair enough, i’ll make that #3 on my list as everything else here in the wishlist seems a little… less urgent or they are things I am not the slightest bit familiar with [like the Media Center]. As you know im putting all my 101% into getting ReadyBoost working though, if i get stuck maybe i’ll have a look at some of the other things on the wishlist for a ‘break’ haha! Alas i’m still learning the internals of NT6 so with everything I do, whether it works or not, I am getting more and more familiar with Vista/2008 🙂

    UPDATE

This is going to be tricky. So far i’ve managed to get 2008 to load the ecache driver at pre-boot and run the EMDMgmt service with the right credentials, at a seemingly functional level. I managed to trick the ReadyBoost “tab” to appear via a rundll32 command [i.e., not on the property page of a flash drive] and it is normal on the appearance side of things – but there is no visible way with this to actually have it ‘assigned’ to the proper drive letter or device. I think there is a missing dependency/class in regards to the ecache.sys/emdmgmt.dll talking to the USB Stack/Volume Mount component :S

I kinda wish that guy who was working on this was here so I could see where he got. It looks like i’m going to have to debug/spy/process monitor the entire process of EMD becoming active under Vista. That could take weeks, as I would have to have a logger enabled when I…
    1.insert a USB drive
    2. Open the property page and switch to ReadyBoost
    3. Enable ReadyBoost
…and then cross check every single system file that is referenced to see how they are called, and there is no practical way to filter out the EMD-related activity from the normal crap that goes on in the background with Vista. Not to mention that i’m expecting i’ll run into a dependant library that is probably different between Vista and 2008 – so my hopes of “100% exactly the same functionality as Vista” has now completely plumeted! 🙁

I guess it’s only been a few hours though! I’ll let you guys know when I have something that someone can test for me, to make sure it half-works on other systems and not just mine. Peace.

in reply to: Nokia PC Suite ? #47135

I can verify that the said version when using that method works for my Nokia 6630 100%, although I run 2008 Enterprise x86. And i connect via USB, not bluetooth. Finding a compatible Bluetooth stack [Widcomm/IVT/Microsoft, etc] would probably be a whole other problem – If you run into any with that it would probably be best discussed in the Driver Compatibility subforum I reckon.

in reply to: My list of games working on win2k8 #45831

Lol, I run an old Prescott P4 [3.2GHz] and 2008 is a hell of a lot faster than Vista with EVERYTHING! I also find that games are just as compatible as Vista. My older favorites such as Age of Wonders Shadow Magic, GTA2 [with the DMUSIC.DLL fix] and my current favorite game – SPORE – work 100% for me. They are all faster than the evaluation copy of Vista SP1 I have/had!

    This site/forum rocks.

Right now im working on transferring ReadyBoost to 2008, this will definately be my second project after I get that done [or get severely stuck with nowhere else to go]. As for transferring the “driver” for System Restore, I prefer to use a much more ‘raw’ way of hacking up stuff like this. Considering that Vista and 200u8 are both NT6 6001 [SP1] it should be easier than it was for XP>2003 [XP is NT5 and 2003 is NT5.1]. In theory anyway, i’m not making any claims I need to do more research but I think its very possible. Anyway i’ll let you know what I find as this is #2 on my list of wanted 2008 features, right after ReadyBoost. Peace.

Just noticed this thread and signed up for the sole reason to let you guys know…

I’ve been a “hacker/cracker” for many years now and am pretty handy with reverse engineering Win32 based programs. To my dissappointment I only noticed today that my 8GB ReadyBoost-Optimized stick is useless in my Server 2008/Vista hybrid!

I’m working on transferring the EMD Driver/Service from Vista Ultimate right now, starting with research. Hopefully it will be ready within the next 24 hours as this is a top priority for me.

I will post here if I run into any problems in the hopes that somebody can help out. I think that porting the Service and Driver will be the easy part, but of course I have no idea if it will compatible. Alas, as i said, i’ve made this my #1 project and want to finish it ASAP. So where there’s a will there’s a way 😉

I’ll keep you guys posted. Starting work right now. Well, after a shower. Lol. Peace!
