Ah yes, dont think there is really anyway way to actually tell windows to “Index Now” per se. But yeah my post isn’t exactly true I guess, indexing does have it’s advantages – for instance, if you index your…. “Short Movies” folders, the thumbnails for each video will become part of the index store I believe and make your general Explorer browsing much more efficient to find that ‘clip’ you wanted….. LOL
ANYWAY, If you are ONLY using Windows Indexing for the FILE SEARCH functions and not for the other crazy stuff like Document Tags and all that, I suggest you take a look at NeoSearch. Created in AutoIt3 [which I also use to create many programs] it is definately a VERY impressive piece of software! Link below, check it out π

Haha thanks guys! In regards to your RECYCLE BIN problem ShadowGuy, that is really strange. Windows should never create a RECYCLER folder on a Removable Drive! Perhaps this “Turbo Memory” thing you speak of [i’ve never used it] is somehow making Windows see the USB drive as a fixed disk instead of removable? Don’t know!
And yes, I know of the Media Center problems haha. I will definately make that the next thing on my list to do! However, I recieved a PM from a chap here asking to get “Origami” working on Server 2008 – I will try to get that working first as it will most likely be a lot easier I think [as it’s not tied into the system like the MCE components and hence will be easier to monitor and diagnose and such] but yeah I will probably have a glance at BOTH these things during this week π

Wow! That’s a fantastic job JonusC! Just tested it in a virtual machine. Installation procedure takes some time but finally… it works!
Note that the screenshot is made from a virtual pc so because of the virtualization the USBStick is not fast enough.
Cheers. Yes I don’t know if so many restarts are actually required, but yeah the registry is a fickle thing especially the LOCAL_MACHINE hive which is only loaded when the OS starts and I just wanted to make sure the instructions worked as well as possible π well thats good news that it works not just for me π
Also, I had to actually press ‘Retest’ on my stick about 5 times before it actually detected it as fast enough. But this may be because my PC is dodgy – I have a few blown capacitors on my motherboard from overclocking [i’ll NEVER do it again] and my USB sometimes fails for no reason lol. Just pointing that out though incase it is infact a known issue for any others who test it before an installer is made.

Although I wont test it (dont have any backups or space to make one), all I can say is Kudos for the great work. Unfortunately I have a 64 bit copy, so chances of functioning on my rig is probably less likely than as is. Again great work and thanks.
Yes well I disocvered that I can make an installer with AutoIt3 although it will take time… and still, that’ll be only for 32-bit. So hopefully someone with some experience can also take my work and make a 64-bit version too π not to mention, actually test it to make sure its working and I didnt just fluke my PC into getting it on hehe!

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer is an advanced tool though. Good luck.
Indexing, in my honest opinion, is completely useless. If is for people who don’t know how to use computers, who forget where they save their files, and don’t know how to organize all their documents properly. The “slow” item-by-item search is more than good enough incase you manage to loose a file. Turn it off completely – your hard-disk will thank you π
Disabling services to increase performance is a MYTH. SERIOUSLY. DONT BELIEVE ANY “Service Tweak guides” on the internet, LEAVE THEM AS DEFAULT.
Windows 5.x [Windows XP and Windows 2003] have inferior CPU Priority Scheduling compared to the new Windows 6 [Vista/2008] family. I have done a LOT of research on this, and my own tests. And I have a very slow computer – a P4 with only 1GB of RAM. Disabling EVERY service that wasnt critical provided NO performance increase in gaming compared to the default service configuration. Windows 5 is sh*tty and will benefit from disabled services, but Windows 6 is uber l33t and has very VERY impressive kernel-level thread prioritization. It is the single reason why I refuse to go back to XP π
With that said, there may be some services that you actually DO want to disable for non-performance reasons. Windows Update for example to sure-shot block Auto Updates, or the DOMAIN-SERVER related services because you are 101% sure they will never be needed. But I highly suggest that you leave the defaults for maximum compatibility – I made the mistake of disabling things like “Application Compatibility” among others and half my programs crashed randomly or InstallShield programs [90% of games] would fail installing.
If you don’t know much about services, I highly suggest you just leave it. If it aint broke, don’t fix it.

Hello everybody, I’ve just started using Win2008 (DataCenter Edition x64). Everything have worked fine, except two things.
The first is quite annoying… But my Server Manager won’t start. When I start it from the Administration Panel I only get the Computer Manager and if I try to start it from C:Windowssystem32ServerManager it starts, but hangs as fast as it’s loaded.
Anybody who knows what this can be? I belive it became like this when I tried to get the aero themes etc with the converter.
The second problem isn’t that big, but still annoying. When installing ACDSee Pro 2 I get an error message saying that there’s something wrong with sti.dll or that it’s missing…Would be great with some feedback, I really like Win 2008 π
ACDSee problem, no idea sorry.
But your first problem, that is telling me you are using an illegal crack. All cracks for 2008 break the Server Manager. Buy it legally.
Windows Server 2008 Workstation Converter is poorly translated to English, and buggy. Used it twice on two different installs, two different version, both destroyed my 2008 install.
Read the guides all over the net and do it manually man.
I will probably make my own tool soon, because i’m not too impressed with the one that already exists.
No offence if the creator of it reads this! Its still good and I have respect for the hard work done π but it does have problems.
EDIT: That was probably pretty nasty and disrespectful to say all that, sorry π it was only my experience of course – i’m probably just unlucky!
MediaMonkey 3.x with my Sony PSP and iTunes 8 with my iPod Nano work fine for me.
But they are just standard USB devices, and not that other format that Microsoft players use [where there is no drive letter but it actually comes up under My Computer as a media player or whatevs] cant remember what its called. Media Device Connection or something? Random guess.
I assume by Code 10 you are referring to the “Windows cannot start this device” or whatever?
Do you have another Wireless adaptor to test? All the right services enabled and such?
Fun π I love the background man, what’s it called if I may ask?

I used a method similar to Arrisβ and can confirm this works on x64. I also installed the Bluetooth stack and have this working in conjunction with my phone and Nokia PC Suiteβand this works better on 2008 than it did on Vista, so go figure.
Everything works better in 2008 than Vista for me haha [with the tiny exception of some software saying “This is not for Server OS’s” or whatever].
2008 seems so much more responsive and stable for me π
I might be able to decrypt/document the authui.dll file from 2008 to eliminate the need of using an older version of the file….
…all in due time no promises lol. Get a copy of PE Explorer guys, great for hacking DLL’s and such [way better than Resource Tuner] even though it is commercial. But I love it.

Spore will also run without having to install it in S08 if you have it on a previous windows version install (XPSP3 for me) Just copy your gamesaves from “My Spore Creations” and the “Documents and settings>user>Application data>Spore” to the same for “My spore creations” and copy the files from “Documents and settings>Application data>Spore” to “C:Users>user>Appdata>Roaming>Spore”. That’s it! You don’t have to separately install spore!
I do that kind of thing everyday π if something doesnt install in 2008 I install it under XP then just copy it over hehe!
Don’t you love it though when games don’t need any registry keys π just copy the game folder over and there ya go π
