I’ve also seen this, though it’s pretty rare, not more than once per week. It usually happens when playing a game or doing something else graphically intensive, so I’ve put it down to the video drivers.

    Laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad SL400, T5670, 4GB RAM, nVidia 9300M GS 512MB.

this is coming from someone who thought 32 bit was good enough, remember indrek?! LOLz.
you thought that 32 bit was good enough and it isn’t 😆

I don’t recall making that statement at the moment, but I very well might have, since 32-bit is good enough for a lot of people. It’s nice that you do advanced 3D modelling. That makes you one of the people who really do benefit from 64-bit computing. I do programming, run VMs, and record and process audio. That makes me also one of the people who benefit from 64-bit computing. But that doesn’t mean that every one of the billion or so people who uses Windows, or computers in general, needs what 64-bit offers.
Edit: ah, I think I found the discussion you were talking about. You might want to read through it again, to better understand what I was trying to say, instead of randomly ripping statements out of context and criticising them.

Anyway, you’re right, let’s keep this focused on Windows and its future. One thing I would really like to see, and what you mentioned as well, is a central package manager. Actually Microsoft already have a pretty powerful mechanism in place with Windows Update, so if they’d simply expand it to also offer downloads and updates for 3rd party software, that’d take care of this issue. Of course, there are myriad legal issues to overcome, but that doesn’t mean one can’t dream.

I meant that the average PC is STILL 2.x GHz. the average should be 8Ghz by now since I had a 2.2GHz(*) athlon like 6 years ago! I got a 2.2GHz Phenom x4!

I’ve got a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo, and I’ll bet it can wipe the floor with a 2.2GHz Athlon from 6 years ago. Hell, any CPU from 6 years ago.

    Just they have multiple cores.

You’re either joking or really ignorant. Has it ever occurred to you that maybe the 2GHz mark is the optimum for the average computer, and that switching to multiple cores and parallel processing was the next logical step?

I don’t get you. First you say you want 8GHz processors, and then you drool over 88-core CPUs. You can’t have both, you know – for one, power consumption would be insane. The gigaherz race is over, accept that.

And there is a rumor that it would have 128bit support….. people haven’t even adopted 64 bit yet in the mainstream. This is strange.

Notice they talk about IA-128. That refers to Intel’s Itanium architecture, and the last consumer Windows to have Itanium support was XP. So even if IA-128 existed (which it doesn’t, btw), it would be very unlikely to be supported in Windows 8. If and when the consumer Windows gets 128-bit support, it’ll either be x86-128 (an extension to the x86 architecture, like the current x86-64 which is what most people mean when talking about 64-bit) or a totally new architecture.

128-bit speculations aside, I don’t see anything noteworthy on that site. Windows 8 will have new networking features? Really? Didn’t see that one coming. I mean, it’s not like every single Windows version before it has had improved networking over its predecessor or anything. Oh wait… 😛 The concept video, while tasty, was made by an independent design team and has very little to do with Windows 8.

Odd, it worked just fine for me. Do you get an error or anything when starting Avira? Are the related services (Avira AntiVir Guard and Avira AntiVir Scheduler) started and startup type set to Automatic?

Is the tokens.dat file you’re talking about the one in C:WindowsServiceProfilesNetworkServiceAppDataRoamingMicrosoftSoftwareProtectionPlatform ? You could try replacing it with one from Windows 7 and see what happens.

In fact, I’ll try and do this tonight to see if MSE will install.

in reply to: External USB hard drive problem #50099

How are you powering the drive? A USB port gives 500mA, if I recall correctly, which isn’t enough for a 320GB drive (even if it’s a 2.5″ drive).
Does the drive even spin up? If there’s any lights on it, do they light up?

If it’s working fine in Win7 on the same computer, then that rules out insufficient power as the cause, but I thought I’d check anyway.

Also, I ask again, does anything show up in Disk Management?
And have you tried searching for drivers for the two unrecognised devices? Bing their hardware ID’s or something.

software that doesnt have separate x64 version but DO HAVE 64bit support

If you mean software that has a common installer for both architectures and thus no separate x64 version (like Paint.NET), then it should go to Program Files.
If you mean software that is 32-bit but has some 64-bit capabilities (like Tracktion), then it should go to Program Files (x86).

In both cases the installer should take care of choosing the correct path.

Also , indrek you sound like you don’t multitask much. You prolly don’t have much explorer windows open to care or don’t use grouping.

I use the default Win7 grouping method (always group, hide labels). As for multitasking, I’m not sure what you mean by “much”, and I won’t start listing the programs I use, but suffice to say I do multitask enough. I don’t have a lot of Explorer Windows open, though – 4 or 5, tops, and that’s when I copy files back and forth. Never had a problem finding the right folder, and never missed having the number of Explorer windows.

in reply to: External USB hard drive problem #50095

Check in Disk Management, does it appear there? Perhaps there’s a conflict with drive letters or something.
Also, do the USB ports work at all? You mentioned two unrecognised deviced in DevMan – perhaps they’re the USB root hubs. Have you tried other USB devices (storage or otherwise) in the same port?

Do you like having to right click on a folder and go to properties just to see if it is shared?

The details pane at the bottom can also tell you if a folder is shared. Although yes, the removal of the shared overlay was a weird decision.

do you like not having the network icon let you know whether you have local only access, or internet access or not at all-or would you just like a worthless icon that does not indicate the state of the network?

If there’s no internet access, the icon will have a warning sign (yellow triangle with exclamation mark) on it.
Personally, I never cared for the activity animation (the screen on the little computer flashing) in older versions of Windows. Then again, I’m mostly on a wireless connection; I can’t even recall right now what the icon is like for wired connections.

would you also not like having quick controls for managing power plans on your laptop, instead, having to go to the control panel all the way there and selecting only two power plans instead of the hidden “high performance” plan?

What quick controls did Vista have for managing power plans that 7 doesn’t? Or by “manage”, do you mean “select”?
Personally I never understand why people need to switch between different power plans all the time. I always use the Balanced one, tweaked to my liking.

would you not like to know how many windows explorer windows are open?

I cannot think of a scenario where that information would be useful.

would you like to have the name of the song pop up in the miniplayer as well as having seek controls and volume, etc? or just some dumbed down thumbnail with just next and prev buttons?

Personally, I like the new thumbnail view. I have other means for controlling volume (knob on external sound card) and playback (hotkeys on keyboard), but even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t want to have them in the preview either.
Also, I’m pretty sure the song title is shown in the thumbnail tooltip. Not sure though, I’ve been using Zune almost exclusively for the last month or so.

or status bar not really showing status? or rather a generic “working” with thinking going on?

I miss the information in the status bar, yes. Not sure what you mean with that second sentence, though.

File permissions are a separate issue. As far as I understood, JonusC was talking about running applications, for which you indeed don’t need to go higher than Administrator.

in reply to: WARNING!!nVidia Driver issues!! #49977

I got the email from nVidia about the new driver, and was going to try it, but decided against it as it was a beta. Good thing I did, it seems. Release 186 is working great for me (ThinkPad SL400 w/ 9300M GS).
