Someone mentioned a problem similar to yours. They had to go into Device Manager and grab the Hardware ID and “whitelist” it to the INF file so Nvidia would properly detect and install the latest driver. Sounds more like an Nvidia bug if anything.

Sony is also the biggest proprietary company i have ever seen. Not saying that they are crap but they have a reputation of being proprietary.

Nvidia usually excludes OEM versions of their graphics cards from their drivers. The release notes for 257.21 even suggest to, quote, “contact Sony for driver support for Sony VAIO notebooks”. Some time ago they wouldn’t directly support Dell and Lenovo laptops either.

Usually this is because the OEM doesn’t want to have to support the latest drivers without testing them on their notebooks, so they encourage people to only use the drivers they supply. In some cases, though, the OEM might have customised the driver and/or hardware to include features that the vanilla nVidia drivers don’t support. So just to be on the safe side you might want to have the latest driver from Sony at hand, so you can roll back to it in case the new one doesn’t work.

Still nothing, power options are disabled.

By the way, while I greatly appreciate your help, I hope you’re not going out of your way to fix this. It’s not really a major issue, I can live with just the Balanced plan; I was just wondering if there was something simple I was missing. Doesn’t look that way, so I guess we can write it off as one of the quirks of converting R2 to a workstation.

I see all those files, except the last one is called powrprof.dll (no “e” in there).

I’m trying your ACL restore script now, will report back in a moment.

Edit: ran the script and followed the instructions, but still no dice.

Edit2: I also tried logging out and back in, but should I restart or something after running the script?

I installed the driver, but power options are still greyed out.

    And yes, it’s a Thinkpad SL400.

Thanks for the reply. I created the new user account, but power options are still greyed out (see attached screen snip).

System info file is also attached, as requested.
    Edit: removed attachment now.

Game: Overlord (incl. Raising Hell expansion)

Issues: The vanilla version required administrative privileges and crashed when exiting (but not during playing). To fix it, just apply the latest patch (or install Raising Hell).

It’s widely preferred and used because, unlike R2, it’s readily available to consumers through retail and pre-installed on new computers. Also, unlike R2, it doesn’t need a fairly involved customisation process to turn it into a workstation.

Avira doesn’t do such upgrades, the installer will first remove the older version and then install the new one. Unless they’ve changed that behaviour with version 10, of course.
I’m downloading v10 right now and will try it out, but I doubt it’ll work.

Edit: well paint me red and call me grandma, it works! Looks like upgrading bypasses the OS version check. Avira 10 is running and everything (updating, scanning, detecting) seems to work. Thanks for the tip!

in reply to: Security Software #49246

You mean upgraded from within Avira, as opposed to downloading the new version manually? How do you do that? I looked around in the program but didn’t find a way to upgrade the product version.

Where does it say who the current owner is? I did not see that, but I suspect it’s ok (I’d be happy to check it again though).

In the Security tab, click on Advanced (it’s near the bottom). In the new dialog that opens, click on the Owner tab. You’ll find the current owner there.

    See if this works:

It’s for Server 2008, but perhaps it’ll work with R2 as well.

in reply to: Windows XP Mode #49053

That article is kinda moot now, since XP Mode no longer requires hardware virtualisation.
