That’s a bit strange because the “systemPropertiesPerformance.exe” application doesn’t require admin privileges or anything to run. I just created a standard user account (to test it out) and I went through the GUI (Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings > etc…) and my settings “sticked” no problem. Could it be that I have User Account Control disabled and you have yours on? Maybe thats why?
It is possible that some form of malware is modifying the contents of your registry and thus the reason why your settings do not “stick”. Also some graphic driver utilities come with “graphics management” tools which allow you to change and adjust the visual effects of your machine. There could be a 3rd party service installed on your machine that is taking precedence over the Windows utility.
Click on start > administrative tools > Services
Go to Action > Export List
Save file to Desktop
Call the file “myservices”
Attach the file in a new post so i can see a list of your services running on your computer and see if theres anything out of the ordinary.

wow….that let me install the latest drivers. i think my screen looks much better now ..
thanks a lot…No problem glad I could help you. Enjoy Server!

Usually this is because the OEM doesn’t want to have to support the latest drivers without testing them on their notebooks, so they encourage people to only use the drivers they supply. In some cases, though, the OEM might have customised the driver and/or hardware to include features that the vanilla nVidia drivers don’t support. So just to be on the safe side you might want to have the latest driver from Sony at hand, so you can roll back to it in case the new one doesn’t work.
I can’t say I don’t blame Sony for hardware testing the latest nvidia builds before making them public to ensure quality assurance but they shouldn’t blacklist the chipset all together so it cannot be installed from Nvidia’s website. The company could release what they call the latest “stable” build and that installing a newer driver might cause instability, a warning sort to speak. Sony has had problems with faulty nvidia chipsets before and not to mention Nvidia is the number one cause of Vista-related blue screens. They should realize though that forcing people to use only their product will discourage them from using them. Only the fanboys wouldn’t mind. Know any Sony fanboys? LOL
Download the “257.21” version Nvidia driver from the link I posted above. After that open it up and let it extract the file. Hit cancel and close out of the installation process (do not begin install). Go to the extracted folder (C:NVIDIA) locate NV_DISP.inf and delete it. I have modded the INF file to include your mobile GeForce 310M chipset. Replace the original NV_DISP.inf file with mine and try to run installation. I have attached the file in the post below. I had to zip it because .inf extension isn’t allowed.
It doesn’t appear to be a Server-specific problem. Nvidia Windows 7 64-bit drivers work with Server 2008 R2. It’s Nvidia that is giving you the fits. I can bet those Nvidia.com drivers don’t work on Windows 7 as well.

Someone mentioned a problem similar to yours. They had to go into Device Manager and grab the Hardware ID and “whitelist” it to the INF file so Nvidia would properly detect and install the latest driver. Sounds more like an Nvidia bug if anything.
Sony is also the biggest proprietary company i have ever seen. Not saying that they are crap but they have a reputation of being proprietary.
Have you downloaded the latest Windows 7 64-bit driver build from Nvidia’s website (257.21)?
It might just be the themes package that is fooling you into thinking the sharpness is worse when its really no different. I assume you have the “desktop experience” feature installed and Windows Aero enabled. If you don’t have the Windows 7 themes package try installing that on the home page and then pick a default theme you used in Windows 7. I have used different theme packages on Server 2008 R2 for example 1080p wallpaper and my screen looks a lot more clearer than the default windows 7 theme. Your eyes are fooled into thinking the quality is worse when really its not.
I understand your frustrations and clearly you are not the only one with a reasonable gripe. Microsoft needs to get off their lazy butts and fix this issue. Hopefully it will resolved when the first service pack is released. I still don’t see how Hyper V is any competition to VMWare. It’s way more scalable and flexible than Hyper-V ever was. The latest 7.1 build has support for up to 8 cores (aka the i7) and hardware acceleration which ables Windows Aero in a virtual environment. Not to mention you can run other OS’s like Linux, Mac OSX, or Solaris. Though VMWare is not perfect either. There was a vulnerability in the software that if the user enabled shared folders on the host machine a remote attacker could tunnel his way into the physical machine and wreck havoc if they so chose to.
Enough said.
Sorry I had to turn off anonymous authentication because I was constantly being dictionary attacked.
Here’s the credentials:
Username: publicftpuser
Password: server2008r2rules!Oh geez. Maybe its best to just roll with 4.2. It works. No hassle.
Could you provide me a download link to the “PMB 5.2” msi file so I could examine the MSI file as well and try to get it working for you. Do I need the driver itself to be working before the software program will work or can I do it without it?
Download the application verifier tool: Download Site
You want the “ApplicationVerifier.amd64.msi” one.
Now there are two versions, the 32-bit and 64-bit one. You installed a 64-bit driver, but is the program itself 32-bit or 64-bit? Check the application path, if its program files (x86) then its 32-bit obviously. Once you have located the file…
1. File > Add Application… select the .exe
2. Expand compatibility
3. Check the “highversionlie” checkbox
4. Right-click highversionlie and choose properties.
Put in the following:
Major Version: 6
Minor Version: 1
Build number: 7600Minimize the application verifier program and try launching the program. This should trick the program into thinking its running it in windows 7, but thats only if it uses this method for validation. Worth a try, tell me if it works or not.

I do not believe PMB uses WIA to retrieve video from the camcorder.
Have you tried it yet?
You might be right but services run in support of a program and some devices will refuse to work without them. Take for example my Lexmark scanner. I successfully installed driver and everything. Looked in device manager and it says the device working properly. Upon looking in “Devices and Printers” nothing shows up. Once I enabled the WIA service bam it popped on. If your device doesn’t depend on this service then you should have seen it in devices and printers.
WIA is mostly used to support flatbed scanners, and still image camera, but it can include video as well. To be honest I think this has more to do with 64-bit support than anything. Have you tried the device on a different OS, Windows 7 32-bit? Windows 7 64-bit? Windows Vista 32-bit/64-bit?
