Hey ExpertUser,

I have got another tweak you can integrate into the next version of you R2 Conv GUI. It’s the Windows Media Player plugin for Firefox that allows you to play Windows Media content on websites that support it. For example I found this site that streams my local police scanner through Windows Media Encoder 9 Server. Useful on those sites that use this technology. Firefox does have a plugin to support WMV but it only works for client desktops by default. I just simply extracted compressed file and editing the MSI with ORCA and dropped the client OS dependancy. The attached file below is the tweaked one compatible with Windows Server so its already ready to go.

Here is an example of Firefox BEFORE and AFTER Windows Media Player plugin support.

BEFORE:

beforewmvplugin.jpg[/attachment:fkiir7o6]

AFTER:

afterwmvplugin.jpg[/attachment:fkiir7o6]

As you can see the Windows Media stream now appears.

Did you mean DVB-S?

Try the registry fix attached.

lol

thats true for sure. I never use nero for back up. What do you use for burning cds?

Disc images (.iso, .daa, .img, .uif, etc) – Power ISO
Audio CDs – Roxio Creator 9 (I still have CD from years back)
DVD Video – Easy MPEG/AVI/DIVX to DVD or Cyberlink PowerDVD
Data CDs/DVDs – Roxio or just built-in Windows utility

I can also confirm that the spp.dll fix works great, Arvur!

Thanks for taking the system restore issue into matter. I haven’t been messing around on Windows Server as much lately as I have been trying to learn new exploits in Backtrack 5. Specifically learning about metasploit so I can get root access to somebody else’s machine. Not for malicious intent or anything but just to see if I am capable of learning it. I was able to successfully create a FUD(full undetectable) backdoored executable that when launched allows me to gain root access to a machine on my local network, but it depends on a few important factors. One, you need physical access to the network. Two, you have to entice your victim to actually click on your executable. I have ran the autopwn feature in metasploit database, but was unable to find a session. Because metasploit is a public project, most AVs are tuned to detecting most common payloads and pick them up as threats. Thats why most of the “tutorials” you see on youtube are pretty much useless because they are using older exploits that only works on an unpatched XP machine with SP2! Lesser and lesser people are running XP now a days, so it kind of defeats the purpose of doing this. Oh well, it is still pretty neat. Gerix Wifi cracker makes breaking into WEP as simple as 1-2-3!

I tried out the software for a few days and I have to say it friggin SUCKS.

The interface is very slow to load any module and the Backup utility consumes too much of my hard disk bandwidth. When it runs an update or backs up my files when I am playing a game, it will interrupt my game window.

This program is an epic failure.

step 17b: Install program using nero.mmsplatinum.msi 😛

I have figured out your problem. Be prepared to enjoy the lengthy install process! I kid you not my friend.

Step 1: Install Prerequisites

Before you begin installation/hacking process make sure you have installed following at bare minimum:

Orca MSI Editor: http://www.technipages.com/download-orca-msi-editor.html
C++ 2008 SP1 X86: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5582
C++ 2010 SP1 X86: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328
C++ 2010 SP1 X64: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=13523
.NET Framework 4.0 Client: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24872
Note: You must have the .NET Framework 3.5 role installed through server manager before you can install this version.

For the Direct3D 9 Extensions and HLSL Complier you can download that by installing the DirectX SDK here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=23776

Ok now that we have our prereq’s out of the way let’s begin the ACTUAL installation modification process.

Step 2: Insert the Nero 11 DVD. If Autorun pops up, ignore it by closing it out.

Step 3: Right-click on your DVD drive and choose “Open

Step 4: Double-click on Nero_PlatinumHD-11.0.15500.exe to launch it. Allow the application to extract the installation files until the error message pops up telling you that you require xp Sp3/vista/7. Exit the program.

Step 5: Click on Start and choose Run…

Step 6: In run, type %temp% and hit enter

Step 7: Locate a folder called “NeroInstallFiles“. Copy the entire folder to your Downloads folder. You can very easily skip this step of copying, but its a good practice to copy the files over so you have an original in case you accidently deleted a file or corrupted it in some way.

Step 8: Double click inside NeroInstallFiles. Now click on the folder called NeroRANDOMDIGITS (for example Nero2011092814145232)

Step 9: Locate nero.mmsplatinum.msi and choose “Edit with Orca..”

Step 10: On the left side under Tables, locate LaunchCondition.

Step 11: Under condition, right-click on Not (Version9X or VersionNT <=500 Or …etc) and drop the row. Hit OK to confirm deletion.

Step 12: Click File > Save to apply changes to MSI.

Step 13: Now navigate to ISSetupPrerequisites folder. Go to BackupDriversx64 folder.

Step 14: right-click on nero.backupdriversx64.msi and choose Edit with Orca

Step 15: Repeat Steps 10-12.

Step 16: Navigate back to NeroRANDOMDIGITS folder. Click on applications folder.

Step 17: Inside the applications folder you will see a long list of application folders…

backitup
backituphelpchm
bdcore
burningrom
burningromhelpchm

And so forth.

Repeat Steps 10-12 for every single MSI package inside applications folder.

You need to manually go into every single folder and edit the the MSI packages and drop the condition that requires XP Sp3/Vista/7 only. And yes you need to modify every single one or the installation will fail.

Step 18: Navigate back to ISSetupPrerequisites and launch nero.backupdriversx64.msi. This will install the backup driver so the Nero BackItUp utility becomes functional. It will ask you to reboot your machine. Once you have done so the installation of Nero 11 is complete.

WHEW!

I think it has more to do with networking configuration than the client itself. I don’t seem to have a problem with either, however uTorrent actually works better on my machine.

I have my enabled UPnP on my router which allows you to “randomize” a port each time the torrent client connects. As you can see from my results below, uTorrent was almost 3x faster than BitComet.

In 5 mins, uTorrent was able to download 299MB.
In 5 mins, Bit Comet was only able to download 112.04MB.

(BitComet x64)

For watching 1080p Youtube videos I recommend using 64 bit Flash player. I found the CPU usage went down from 60%/20% to 50%/20%.

So, I’ve been having this issue where hulu/ flash works at “normal” resolution, but when I switch to full screen, I get really bad, blocky, pixelated, sometimes blurry portions of the screen. If I downsize to the tiny player, it looks fine. I suspect some kind of scaling issue? I have the latest driver (according to AMD’s autodetect) for my ATI HD4200 Radeon integrated mb graphics gpu and finally got the AMD ECC to work and disabled overscan/underscan (thanks to this board), but even using the latest FF with x64 flash player, the problem is the same. I have tried with IE (32/64) and GC (32) but all versions have the same issue. If I reboot back into XP32, the screen looks fine maximized and I don’t have these issues. I don’t even mind doing that, but if I could, it would be nice just use r2. Everything else I have tried seems to work fine (I followed the setup guide on this forum for server as workstation with r2).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Solution 1: Disable hardware acceleration on the video itself

Go back to your desired HULU video that you wish to watch… switch to full screen. Right-click in the middle of the video somewhere and choose Settings… After that uncheck “Enable hardware acceleration”. See if that helps.

Solution 2: Disable AMD Overdrive

Step 1. Open Catalyst Control Center

Step 2: Click Performance

Step 3: Click “AMD Overdrive”

Step 4: Uncheck “Enable Overdrive” option on top. Hit apply and close out.

Solution 3: Ditch AMD/ATI and their POS products

Try Solution #1 first, if that doesnt work try solution #2. If not, then hit yourself in the head and cry yourself at sleep saying “WHY DID I PURCHASE AN ATI PRODUCT?” Then you will dream of an overclocked GTX 590 and your life will be better. The end.

You do not need to follow this procedure tu enable system protection, you just have to install it via server manager, add features, System Protection, and then enable it by right clicking on computer, advanced system settings, system protection, and enabling system restoring on desired disk/partition. I hope this be useful for someone, bye 🙂

You are mistaken my friend. Windows Server 2008 R2 does not contain any roles or features that will enable system restore. The closest thing Server has is system state backups which requires the Windows Server Backup utility. It is a more a system wide backup…in essence you are virtually re-imaging your entire machine every time you run it. System Restore is a little more generic but it makes it great if you want to restore you machine from an application that is incompatible or you need to revert to a previous state a lot quicker than a system state restore.

I see. Well like I said it was completely new experience to me. My review was a bit biased granted. I still am a fan of ESET its extremely light…my PC was booting up in 26 seconds with ESET and it jumped to 38 seconds with Avira. I tried Microsoft Security Essentials and it was only a few seconds faster. ESET for win!

It seems Avira released new version, and changed the name a bit, to Avira Free Antivirus 2012. I didn’t manage to upgrade existing version to new one, I got the message “An installation on server system of this product is not possible. The setup will be cancelled.“. Did anyone manage to install new version on Server Windows? Any tips?

IgorHW,

List of software packages you will need to complete this task:

Application Verifier: DOWNLOAD

WinRAR 64-bit for R2: DOWNLOAD

in reply to: System Restore #50973

I used a Windows 7 loader to activate my R2 as a Windows 7 machine. Upon rebooting my server was pretty much disfunctional. Server Manager was inaccsessible, Windows Server Backup, Share and Storage Management…pretty much everything. Windows thought I was the client (Windows 7) machine. Upon creating a restore point, I rebooted and went into the recovery console aka “Repair your computer”. I created a restore point called “Test”. Upon entering system restore (rstrui) I noticed that it allowed me to restore my computer. However I am only able to recover restore points when my licensing on my PC is switched to “Windows 7-mode” if you want to call it that. So this makes me believe that the reason why we are not able to restore R2 using R2-licensing is not because of a missing DLL or registry, but a integrity check that is somehow checking to see if we have the right edition of Windows installed. I tried changing the “EditionID” registry string to 7 but that didn’t help. I’ll try to investigate this matter later….atleast I know I’m on the right path. It’s definietely not a missing system file or DLL…its not writing to the “System Reserved” partition somehow.
