What’s slated for SP2? Anything new or any major performance boosts?

My idea – leave it unopened! 😀

That being said – Anti-virus applications are picky, If it doesn’t have ‘business’ written on the box somewhere chances are it won’t work without editing the install file.

I don’t agree with that at all.

The only software you have problems running is the anti-virus stuff. Any hardware that works on Vista will work on 08.

Yep, I have noticed its a bit slow around here lately.

    There are two problems really:

Firstly, not many people are savvy enough to download a server OS and set it up as a desktop OS, regardless of any fantastic guides they’re given.

Secondly, I suspect that once people have it up and running, they’ll either not come back here, or only come back when they encounter a problem, which is sad.

As such, I think the site can only really expect to get a core userbase and then the odd few stragglers who come along looking for help.

I think if you guys want more users you’ll have to set the site up as a place to discuss the Win7 beta, and eventually turn it towards a basic Windows OS discussion forum.

That being said, I’m happy either way, there are some very helpful members here, and you guys sort out my issues far quicker than any forum I know of 🙂

    better method.

    Install CCC and latest drivers.

Go into device manager and uninstall the graphics card (do NOT check uninstall drivers).

Click on detect hardware changes, and your card will be reinstalled with the latest drivers.

Go into start menu, find CCC and click “restart runtime”.

And now you have working drivers + CCC without third party tools 🙂

This is an issue with optical drives that I also suffer from – don’t worry, its not frozen, but it does take a good 10 minutes for the first screen to be displayed. You can install it, trust me 🙂 you just have to wait a while 🙂

in reply to: Windows 7 Build 7000 #47928

Yea, that’s what everyone told me when I got the errors the first time i installed server08. I did every test imaginable and constantly monitored my temperatures for weeks before i was sure that its not that.

Anyway, the next step in upgrading my pc is a new mobo, because it supports the X2 6000+ and X1950 Pro at most and nothing more advanced. That’s good for now, it runs everything pretty quickly, including new games, which surprised me 🙂 But in the future it won’t be enough.

in reply to: Windows 7 or Windows 2008 Server R2? #48017

There’s no way it should be booting that slow on your system – except I notice you have IDE drives. I know they’re out of date now but i’m not sure how much slower they are than SATA drives.

in reply to: Windows 7 or Windows 2008 Server R2? #48015

Are you running server on old hardware there? It boots up in about 35 seconds for me?

About R2 – do we get that as a downloadable update or do we have to download and upgrade?

in reply to: Windows 7 Build 7000 #47926

@ bboy – i don’t think its damaged – it certainly runs perfectly well on server08, the dwm.exe errors are down to the mobo being old, that much I know, as newer Asus mobos had the issue fixed in a bios update – its just not available for my model 🙁

I will install Win 7 again when my new hard drive arrives (short on space at the mo) and see if it gradually irons itself out.

I know when I have a fresh install of Server08 the errors happen very often and then after a week or so they happen much less frequently, to the point where they don’t bother me. Which is a strange pattern but i’m not going to complain too much! 😛

in reply to: Windows 7 Build 7000 #47923

Yea, the version i got was clean.

    My system is

    ASUS M2V-MX mobo
    AMD64 X2 6000+
    4Gb DDR2 RAM
    X1950 PRO 256MB
    160 SATA 7200 HDD

I get a lot of dwm.exe crashes in server08 and any vista iteration that makes use of aero (its just an annoyance).

I used the beta for a few minutes and got about 8 crashes (far more than Server08/Vista) AND it couldn’t see the other partition on my hard drive – making it kind of pointless as a testing exercise because I couldn’t get access to my documents/apps or anything 🙁

in reply to: Windows 7 Build 7000 #47921

I tried it – unfortunately i quickly uninstalled it because it appears that my mobo is even less compatible with 7 🙁

Those damn dwm.exe errors were happening every minute – conclusion is that I have to upgrade my mobo before i buy windows 7 🙁

in reply to: Windows 7 Build 7000 #47919

The x64 version of 7 beta has finally leaked – so I’m going to get my hard drives organised so that I can dual boot server 08 and 7 beta 🙂 Can’t wait to give it a try, I want to see for myself if its as good as everyone is saying!

in reply to: Default Admin Account #47960

    Thanks for that 🙂

I find it a pain because whenever you play a game or something it always sets your name as “Administrator”, and setting ownership is a pain when you have to type in “administrator” all the time too 😛

in reply to: Activation problem :( #47236

Thanks for that Arris – the boot manager did nothing for me. I don’t understand at all what’s happened, the Windows folder is there, complete on the drive, the page file is there and everything, but for some reason, nothing can see the Windows folder.

In the end, I’ve just gone through and manually deleted what I can of the windows folder (as its taking up 14gb on two partitions now!) however, the winsxs folder is impossible to get rid of, which is annoying, because there’s 6gb of space there not doing anything 🙁

I have a tool that lets me take ownership via right click, but for some reason it doesn’t work when you select more than 15 items at once? Even if they’re the same type (folder, files etc). I’m not gonna sit and manually delete 10,000 files like that 🙁 Taking ownership and applying it to all subcontainers and items still gave me an “access denied” message 🙁

On top of that, I was looking into purchasing a second hdd today (i want to test Windows 7 when it goes beta) only to find that my crummy PSU only has one SATA power cable! Bah!

Not going terrobly well at the moment 😛
