I wanted to try this, but Avira told me that the zip file attached to the first post contains a trojan 🙁
False positive?
I hate MS’s site. I can’t find the UK number anyway 🙁
Maybe i’m blind.

Better than Norton Anti-Virus 2009? Look for the tests for the 2009 series of anti-virus software (via WWW or the different computer magazines) and you will see that Norton AV 2009 is the Nr. 1 everywhere …
Don’t trust magazines, ever. Anything in there is paid for – reviews, tests, etc.
check out the virus bulletin website, Norton is nowhere near the best. AV suites are tested every month, independently.
Aside from the average at best test results – Norton uses more resources than most, and is practically a rootkit in itself, considering you need to download a special tool to uninstall it completely.
Doesn’t seem to be much there relevant to workstation performance. I hope they’re addressing the hyper-v issues if its going to be enabled by default?

Ok, the portfolio of such kind of programs isn’t very big. But the most important (Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware) ARE in this “package”. I.e. for me it is most important to be able to run Norton Anti-Virus Gaming Edition on my 2008 OS …
I would suggest to you that there are far better anti-virus packages available for free that do run on Server08.
Well its still a small niche, the only program I’ve found that wouldn’t work properly was ad-aware. But there are alternatives.
Its not the normal experience, and if i saw that message, I’d be surprised.
This guy makes it sound like it happens with almost everything.
You’ve said that twice now – and again, its not really true. Only with security software, and a very *very* select few other programs.
Have you checked the error log in administrative tools?

With the processor, amount of RAM, the graphics card you have there, I would have thought that you need at least a 500W PSU.
Do you have more than one hard drive? two optical drives?
Three hard drives and one optical drive, but it’s not the PSU. The watts usually fool people because it’s not the watts that matter the most, it’s how many amps the power can handle with 12V since most of the hardware use 12V. So basically if you have some cheap Chinese ping pong 500W PSU that gives only 20A to 12V it’s actually around 240W that it can put out (P=U*I) because the hardware doesn’t use that much of the other voltage outputs.
My most power hungry part of my system is my graphics adapter and everything has been working well with this setup for the last 1½ years so it just can’t be about the power. The tdp values of my system don’t exceed the amount my PSU can lash out.
Yes I see.
So the next thing to ask really is did it suddenly just start happening, or did it happen as soon as you installed server08?

You can’t use Aero in VMWare, because there is no certified driver for it.
Ahh, yes, now I see why that can become annoying 😀

16th January 2009 at 14:39 in reply to: server 2008 R2 Beta available someone already tested? #47972Any reason why you’re not running it with Aero? Is that because you’re running it in vmware?
Is Superfetch not there, or do you have to enable it first?
The first issue sounds like something with your gfx card – either its getting too hot or not getting enough power from the PSU.
With regards to boot times, I have a less powerful system than yours and it boots to the login screen about about 20 seconds, and then takes about 10-15 seconds to get to a usable desktop.
I also followed the services tweak guide and didn’t experience any slow down in boot times. One thing to check – do you have the Hyper-V feature installed?
I’m not really sure about what you’ve said there RemixedCat.
I think MS did really, really, really hype up Vista. I mean they went way over the top with that. I’m not sure how much hype for W7 has come from MS. All I can recall seeing from them is stuff like “we’re rearranging the gui, take a look at these ideas”
and
“we’re releasing the beta”.
All of the hype and “this is what Vista should have been” and “this is the most impressive beta i’ve ever seen from MS” and so on and so forth has come from the blogosphere and journalists rather than from MS this time around.
