Avast “server edition” does not install in R2.

no the settings are stored in another profile NOT A USER ACCOUNT BUT A DIFFERENT INSTALL ‘DIRECTORY’

you can still access the other folders from your NEW installation. HOWEVER YOU MUST REINSTALL ALL OTHER PROGRAMS AND SERVICES, DUE TO THIS BEING A FRESH REINSTALL, BUT NOT FORMAT.

HOWEVER THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS THERE WILL BE JUNK DATA THAT CANNOT BE DELETED AND YOU WILL LOSE SIGNIFICANT DISK SPACE.

the older one will have the folder name with some added characters preceded by a dot or line. those can be accessed but that windows install has been “deactivated” but it may still be bootable, if the reinstallation has not removed the previous OS from the bootloader.

if so you may try to add it in the environment variables option or in msconfig.

attached is a pic depicting this. if your old one is listed. You might be able to add it from there, however I had no luck in getting my old xp partition to boot from there 🙁

Most cases the boot loader will be overwritten and previous OSes are deleted from the boot loader.

    what EXACT BUILD???

and also are you uisng ABP or any noscript or cookie handling addons? ABP greatly greatly reduces the load on your system with all those nasty flash ads going bye bye!

to the person who started the flash ad craze—you suck and you unleased a monster. hope you are happy whereever you are.

Also in WS2008 R1 I do not see trustedinstallers as a group. This may have been a new R2 group, However i will investigate other options….

mabye it’s because they do not expect a server to be overclocked since the cooling requirements and stability concerns, so MS has locked down this type of thing.

However You can create a new user with admin permissions, and give them the trustedinstaller permission.

You can do with with the users and group management. This is located within the computer/server management MSC control.

You may also do this with the particular file. You can set the ownership as admin, or whatever username you want, and then modify permissions. I actually had a simaler problem today with a certain directory and this worked fine.

    I hope this helps.

WARNING ABOUT USING ANY OVERCLOCKING UTILITIES:

DO NOT USE ANY OF THOSE UTITLIES ON DELL COMPUTER SYSTEMS BECUASE OF BIOS LOCKDOWNS. VOLTAGES AND FREQUENCIES MAY BE INNACRUATLY REPORTED AS OVERCLOCKED!!!! ALSO USING THIS MAY CAUSE OVERHEATING.

yes, it is always a good idea to install the GFX card drivers first. Glad your problem is solved.

Did you ensure that the proper services are started? The “desktop experience” server feature gets installed, however the services need to be started.

Windows 7 is not it’s cracked up to be though. My sister had it and NO older games work that well. Adobe premiere acted very bad on it becuase of the built in codecs and we had to strip them out and it caused more problems. Priemiere is very picky about codecs. I wish they would NOT have bundled the codecs with 7. I know it is easy for n00bs who can’t download codecs on thier own, but c’mon what about the media professionals like my sister? They also put a ton of other media overhead crap in 7 that is clunky and I have no need for. I am glad to run a server OS becuase it is clean, efficiant, and I can put what I want on it and not have BS. I can and do make it nice by installing the desktop experience stuff becuase it looks good and makes me feel good.

there is 64 bit IE8 and I WOULD LOVE TO USE IT, but adobe is a party pooper.

does it have a 64 bit flash plugin?? adobe doesn’t want anything to do with x64 systems, yet thier president spends 200K a year on ‘aircraft expenditures’… adobe has always sucked. x64 bit systems have been out for a long time and yet adobe with over 10,000 employees cannot make a simple plugin that’s 64 bit.

MS doesn’t have MSDN for nothin’ yah kno.

Please nag at adobe for not having an x64 bit version of flash plugin. we need as many as we can.

What sites do you have open JF?? wow that’s the smallest ram usage for FF I’ve seen.

I actually wish they would have kept the xp style control panel.

specially for the display section. you have messy links and no unified tabbed interface. each link opens a new window and that’s messy.

I think interface design has gotten too messy and “web oriented” and the god mod interface ties it all together much better.

I actually hope the next microsoft OS release will go in the direction of the GNOME UI. It is prolly the most user friendly UI. My mom figured it out quicker then vista. so did my husband’s mom. Also I like the fact it has a top and bottom bar, keeping more at your fingertips. I like the top bar, so I can have more status icons, weather, and system commands, and the bottom is task oriented and houses the virtual desktops.

FF has always been bloated. ever since version 2.0.x. I use IE8.

The issues with RAM is that I would rather have an application smartly using RAM and using less commit charge.

commit charge usage is more important then RAM usage becuase using excessive commit charge causes your HD to “thrash” and possibly wear it down quicker and causing servere system slowdowns. RAM can take more of the beating then your HD can.

Now the commit charge of FF with 10 tabs that I had open for a week was 6.7GB just for FF alone! the same for IE8 was 2.6GB! commit charge is what is only being used in the paging file and NOT in RAM.

my IE8 RAM usage with 15 tabs is 430MB and commit charge is 3.8GB. Not bad for leaving this session on for more then 1 week. I always go into task manager and kill a process taking up more then 320MB in my commit charge for more speed.

However on windows server 2008 R1/R2 you can install a tool called Windows System Resource Manager, to automatically do this for you. I have mine setup to kill any IE8 process that uses 512MB or more commit charge, and then it will close it, the tab will recover, and no worries. This is specially good for using on youtube since 8 youtube vids will often get the commit charge that high!

I have an article on this forum somewhere describing this technique. However with FF you cannot do this as all the tabs run in a single process, whereas IE8 runs each tab in a seperate process. You might do this with chrome, however the results were’nt so good.
