None at all, they’re useless anyway. It’s not that hard not to get infected in the first place – just don’t click on email attachments, use a browser with no known vulnerabilities and generally don’t execute shady stuff.
And when a virus scanner does discover a virus in your system, it’s too late to act. You have been compromised, the virus may have installed other undisclosed malware and/or backdoors, and you’re better off reinstalling.
Antivirus programs are snake oil.
It’s an Asus V6va laptop, and Asus seems to be too lazy to provide anything else than XP drivers. But I found Vista drivers for most devices now.
Hey, that’s a great idea – thanks for it and the detailed walkthrough!
I knew about the control panel, it also works through the tray icon. However, I’m intentionally not running as admin – I believe a user account should run with as few access rights as possible. It should be a simple matter of assigning some access right to the ‘Users’ group, but I can’t figure out where to do it… the shutdown right could be easily managed in the security policies editor, but I can’t find a corresponding setting for the power options.
Hi,
I appreciate the time and effort you took to create the tutorial. The Lavalys Everest part was news to me. However, in the forum thread that I linked to in my original post below, it seems that the drivers I’m looking for should be on Windows Update. Except I’m not seeing them…
There could be two reasons for their absence: Either I’m missing some option that tells Windows Update to download and install drivers. Or these specific drivers are only for Vista, not for 2k8…. in which case my other thread would gain significance.
I bet that if we could fool Windows Update into thinking that it runs on Vista, we’d get a lot more drivers from it…
Could someone post the key values of the corresponding Vista registry node? I’m willing to experiment, but I need the values…
Best would be if someone could export that part of the registry and upload it somewhere.
