What’s the activation limit for the image downloaded from dreamspark?

Don’t put too much faith into online virus scanners. Virus writers have the same access to those scanners to test their load, and they can simply pack their exe, among other methods. If you still use one, at least scan a already scanned file again in case new virus definitions catch something. Have said that, though, there’s something nice about VirusTotal: it prints the function calls. But if you see LoadLibrary/GetProcAddress, then the rest is meaningless.

There’s no need to run as admin for day to day use. If a game insists admin access, and you want to play it so badly, you can change its manifest, or, in the worst case, use appcompat to redirect registry, etc.

Use firewall to deny all incoming AND outgoing connections, and only allow those you know require them.

Then the only remaining thing is local root escalation. Nothing much you can do, other than keeping things updated and knowing what you run. Easier said than done.

Could it be that I have User Account Control disabled and you have yours on? Maybe thats why?

That’s the reason. I had the same problem back in Server 2008 (before I knew about systemPropertiesPerformance.exe), and for a time I had UAC disabled because of this.

I wish there’s a way to tell UAC just go ahead with the current user token…

in reply to: Webcam in Server 2008 R2 #50374

I have a different MS webcam (VX 1000 or 3000, I forget), and your problem with the LifeCam software is likely due to missing .net runtime 3.0. Just go to server manager and install .net 3.0 and LifeCam should install.

Back in 2008 R1 (or in XP, I forget), I didn’t install LifeCam but extracted its content and told device manager to find the driver from the extract directory. May work in R2, too, but didn’t try.

Nevermind, didn’t realize that this wish list entry is about this already…

in reply to: Windows Sidebar #49763

Here’s a desktop gadget related question:

What firewall rule should I use to allow weather gadget to work, if I block all outbound connection by default?

In Server 2008 R1, it used to be that I just needed to create a rule for sidebar.exe. But in R2 this doesn’t work:
    %ProgramFiles% (x86)Windows Sidebarsidebar.exe
    Allow this connection
    For Public, Private, Domain profiles
Any local/remote address, any protocol, any port

    Edit:
Nevermind, forgot that I’m NOT running the x86 sidebar. Too bad the firewall logging doesn’t log the application name/path.

in reply to: Windows Calendar #49903

OK that’s easy, once I set the correct permission in C:WindowsSystem32TasksMicrosoftWindows

    Now reminder works.

in reply to: Windows Calendar #49902

Like I said, email client bundle is not really what I want. So the goal is to get Windows Calendar working with task scheduler.

In Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Callendar (and other Vista apps) is a part of the Windows Live Essentials pack. 😉

You sure? When I run the installer I only see these:

    Mail
    Photo Gallery
    Toolbar
    Writer
    Family Safety
    Microsoft Office Outlook Connector
    Microsoft Office Live Add-in
    Silverlight

    No Calender 🙁

Now, let me say that I post this because I want a standalone calendar, not some online service or email client bundle.

Aero peek works. I’m talking about desktop icons…

I guess you mean without installing Terminal Session Host.

I wonder if the registry trick for R1 works…

in reply to: Small Logon Problem #49806

    My guess:

Either because of “Do not show last logged on user name” in local group policy, or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947708/en-us.

Also, we ‘d like to get Aero in Remote Desktop when we are connecting from a Vista (or later) client that has Aero enabled, like Vista. It is one of Vista’s remote desktop features.

I believe it’s one of the selling points of server 2008 r2:

Improving User Experience through new Remote Desktop Protocol capabilities. These new capabilities, enabled with Windows Server 2008 R2 in combination with Windows7, improve significantly the experience of remote users, making it more similar to the experience enjoyed by users accessing local computing resources. These improvements include:
    ……
    * Aero Glass support: VDI provides users with the ability to use the AeroGlass UI for client desktops; ensuring that remote desktop sessions look and feel like local desktop sessions.
    ……

I thought theme is enabled by default? I can remote to the same machine and get Vista Basic, just not Aero.
    Same with Remote App
