It depends on the hardware for example it didnt had drivers for my 2900pro ati video card and my asus p5k-se motherboard, not to mention that the drivers included in the windows itself are probably buggy and outdated.

Yeah…I’ve learned about/been burned by the sub-optimal performance of MS generic drivers in the past. Anyhow, I’ve installed all the latest vendor Vista 64 bit drivers from Dell’s website (Chipset, NIC, Audio, SAS Controller, etc) and the problem remains the same. I’ve even binned the Aero UI in favour of windows classic which I would be happy to live with in the hope that it was maybe an Aero UI issue, but sadly not to be.

Annoyingly it’s hard to diagnose, I can’t even use task manager to take a cursory look to see if any particular process is hogging CPU because the UI is so choppy and task manager doesn’t get any refreshes.

    Grrrr.

Hi, I have had the same problems in the past (and I’m having them right now in Vista Ultimate 32). I remember that I solved the problem by installing the latest USB drivers from my MB’s DVD (Gigabyte). I will try this fix again today to see if the problems disappear under Vista 32.
You can really see the difference when you try to copy from external storage back and forth. Try copying sth to a external HD and see the speed. INstall the latest USB drivers and try again and see the difference. You will also see that the lag go away.
In my case it happens when I do a lot of I/O, e.g. using Vuze

in reply to: ATI Catalyst Control Center cannot start #46954

    Hi everyone,

I was running WS2008 64 with 8GB of RAM and a GeForce 8800GTS w/o any problem. I could play basically any game that my card supported.
Last week I got a pair of Radeon 4870×2 and suddenly things turned ugly. I removed the old card, old nVidia drivers (the usual way, no drivers cleaner or anything, I never used them ‘cos I never needed them) and install both cards in crossfire mode (actually this would be Quadfire since there are 4GPUs) and then I installed the latest drivers + CCC 9.6. Everything was ok, no installation errors. However, when I tried to run 3DMark Vantage the PC freezes just when the tests are about to start. I restarted and again, same problems. I tried Crysis (it was working fine with the 8800GTS) and the same happen. As soon as the game starts it freezes.
I checked the PSU (corsair 1000HX), PCIE connections and everything was ok. I tried again with no luck.
I went to ATI website and guess what?…there is a note in the drivers section that says: “Windows Server 2008 NOT SUPPORTED”.

So I removed it and installed Vista Ultimate 64 but this time I couldn’t get the drivers running. I got the following error:

“The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays Manager.”

I’ve tried everything since then. Only 1 card, both cards with no crossfire enable, etc. I always got the same problems. CCC never manage to run properly and always hangs with CPU @100%

I removed Vista Ultimate 64 and installed the 32 bits version and so far I managed to installed the latest drivers + CCC and run 3DMark w/o any problems. I’m testing games now.

My conclusion is that despite what many ppl post in some forums about running 2 of these cards in crossfire under Vista Ultimate 64, the drivers don’t work properly for 64 bits systems. I’ve also read that the problem is the combination of ATI drivers + crossfire + 8GB of RAM. I will test the cards again this weekend using 4GB in Vista 64 and WS2008 to see what happen (boy the PC will suck with 4GB and Vista 64!!).

I don’t know about you people but in my case it was not only the CCC 9.6 not working but it was also the fact that the PC freezes when trying to run any 3D application.

I will keep you posted. Just remember that according to ATI website and their forum, Windows Server 2008 is not a supported OS for ATI graphics drivers. 🙁 Too bad because this OS rocks!!

    in reply to: 8800GTS 64-bit driver? #46691

I have the same card and in my case is working fine without any additional tweak/configuration. Just installed the latest drivers from nVidia (for Vista x64) and done!

take a look at he attached picture.

in reply to: Media Player x64 #46129

    yes, I did.
I installed one of the codecs mentioned in the WMP’s website. The one from cyberlink in my case. I took it from a DVD player’s installation CDs that came with one of my laptops. The problem is that WMP doesn’t play DVDs because it doesn’t work with free codecs. You need a non-free one.

    hope it helps

that’s right, the 6.6 doesn’t work. I downloaded the trial version of the 8.3.6.0 and it works perfect.

Other apps I have running so far:

    – MSN Live messenger 8.5.1302: I had to install it following the instructions in one the posts in this forum (“editing” the .msi file)
    – Office 2007 works fine too
    – Vuze
    – Symantec Corporate edition 10.2.0 (for Vista x64)
    – Logitech Quickcam
    – I solved the problem of WMP 11 not playing DVDs by installing one of the drivers mentioned in the M$’s website (the codecs came embedded with one of my laptops’s DVD players CD)
    – Acrobat 8

    I’ll keep testing and reporting

in reply to: List of Applications (x64) #45605

    add

    – iTunes
    – Nero v8.3.6.0 (Trial from the official site)
    – Vuze 3.1.1.0

in reply to: windows live messenger??? #45276

I installed Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018 using the offline method but it doesn’t work well. Most of the time no problems but sometimes when MSN starts I get the error “MSN has caused some problems. The computer will shut down in 1 minute”.

You know folks, when these people (M$ in this case) put restrictions on the software like controilling the version you intall and whether the OS version is the right one they do this for a reason. Besides the fact that they may have commercial reasons (let’s face it, if we were in their position we would do the exact same thing) sometimes there are also technical reasons. I guess what I’m trying to say is that not because someone finds the way to bypass the version checks or the way the apps are packaged/installed it means that the apps will actually work 🙁
So, becarefull when installing apps using this kind of workarounds otherwise you may endup with an unstable system

I have the same problem (on a x64 platform). I couldn’t solve it so far so I’m still surfing for help. In the meantime I installed VLC and it “works”, which means that it is not a problem of codecs (I’m using K-lite pack).
Btw, I said “works” because it doesn’t work too well. Sometimes it doesn’t play some DVDs (and sometimes it does). Or, it freezes. But you, this what you get for free. That is why I always say: if you want something that works you need to compromi$e 🙂 (in Linux e.g. I couldn’t even make the sound work)

    hope we can solve it
