Informative list, nice work! 🙂 Hope one day all red x‘s will be removed from the list 😉
Hey dhbiker, welcome at the forum! 🙂
Nice to see you are also looking in the “Windows-world”. I’m also trying the same the other way around which is good to widen your sight and increase knowledge about the various Operating Systems available. Some time ago I also tried OSx86 which is also interesting to install.
Anyway, good to have you here and see you around! 😉

24th July 2011 at 15:18 in reply to: Windows Server 2008 r2 Web Server Edition – Windows 7 look #48608The Web Edition should work fine, you are able to follow all steps in the manual. Here are several comparisons between the different editions of Windows Server 2008 R2:
- Edition Comparison by Technical Specification
- Edition Comparison by Server Role
- Differentiated Feature Comparison by Edition
I think wkearney99 is mixing up the possibility for the core- and full installation of Windows Server. In case you do the core installation, you won’t get a graphical desktop but instead only some commandline interface to configure the server whereas the full installation provides a normal desktop with start menu and such. To use Windows Server as a workstation you have to choose the full installation.
Hello wkearney99,
Didn’t test it but I think you have to copy over the following folder and registry branches from Windows 7:
C:WindowsMedia
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesApps
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesNamesWithin the apps branch in the registry multiple apps might be listed that use events that can generate sounds, however by default there are only .Default, Explorer and sapisvr.
Let me know if it works! 🙂

Actually, I experience that localurl thing and lack of images when browsing the site over HTTPS (I guess I wasn’t yesterday, had to switch to HTTP to reply).
Ah, that explains it! Still weird it happens just because it uses a secured socket to communicate, but at least the cause is found! 🙂

The form is nice, much simpler to use. 🙂 I think everything works fine. For guest submitting items, I can’t seem to find an “approve” option (probably just keep missing where it is).
We could configure that, however, I haven’t seen spam or crappy submits in the table yet so let’s just see how it goes. 😉
Will migrate the other tables to the new submission system soon.
I feel like I’m the only one having this problem. Also on the other computers here, the problem doesn’t occur. I probably have to clean up my browser to fix this problem. Anyways, good to hear you can’t reproduce it 😉
Have been working on creating a Security Software Compatibility form today and added a new user to WordPress so you can check and maintain the list easily (e-mailed you the credentials). If you like it or have any suggestions, let me hear it. If everything works fine we can also migrate the other compatibility lists (R2 Games Compatibility and the R1 variants of both lists) to this WordPress plugin.
You can just test the form and delete the data afterwards via WordPress. I also programmed some javascript features which I hope work fine:
* Add dashes in case no issues and/or fix are filled in
* Adds http:// in front of the website if there is not already http:// or https:// in front
* On submitting, creates a url bbcode tag of the website field. I know this is an ugly hack, but the plugin does only support plain-text values so after hacking bbcode-url-support into the plugin. If anything is unclear/might be unclear for people wanting to submit a new application, please let me know 🙂
1.00 AM, bedtime! 😎
Nice finding again, halladayrules! 🙂 You keep amazing me! :geek:
Added a link to your well-explaining steps to the win2008r2workstation.com main page under step 19 so more people will be able to find it. 😉
Good to hear that. 😉
For me though, the forum is acting a little weird after the php upgrade: if I visit it in Mozilla Firefox, it sometimes doesn’t show icons and also doesn’t server-side parse tags as can be seen in ForumProblem.png. At the same moment, in other browsers the site looks fine… After Purging the Cache (other screenshot) everything works fine again. Note the admin control panel also shows ‘logged administrator options’ which are apparently done automatically while I’m surfing the site, yesterday, while not being logged in, it showed ‘Anonymous’ ‘Refreshed “en” localisation of imageset’.
Have you encountered this problem too or is it only me?
A good start would be to run the following command in Start->Run on a Windows 7 x64 machine while monitoring using Sysinternals Process Monitor: control /name Microsoft.LocationAndOtherSensors.
Also, it looks like the following files could be related to this feature in Windows 7:
%SystemRoot%System32
SensorsApi.dll
SensorsClassExtension.dll
SensorsCpl.dll
%SystemRoot%System32en-US
SensorsCpl.dll.muiFurthermore, using the [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1154:doifce8e]Class Enumerator[/localurl:doifce8e] I created, registry classes related to these files could be found (see screenshots).
If the dll exports a DllRegisterServer function, the dll can be registered using the command regsvr32.exe nameOfFile.dll.
Once all files and dependencies are copied to and registered in Windows Server 2008 R2, see if you can open the “Location and Other Sensors” control panel applet. If not, monitor using Process Monitor to see which files/registry keys might be missing, copy these and try again.
Dependency Walker might also be a useful tool to find out which other files (dependencies) are necessary for the dll’s to run.
Hope these gears will help you further in migrating this feature to Windows Server 2008 R2! :geek:
Haven’t played much with the ‘core’ installation of Windows Server 2008 R[1|2], but you could try to run the following command:
ServerManagerCmd -install Desktop-Experience
However, I expect this not to work and copying/registering all files needed for the Desktop Experience feature manually doesn’t sound as an option either.
If you really want to use a bare-bone Windows version, you should take a look at Windows Embedded, also discussed at this forum in [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1295:3363o6h4]this[/localurl:3363o6h4] and [localurl=viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1177#p6034:3363o6h4]this[/localurl:3363o6h4] topic. The installation/configuration page reminds me a bit of the make menuconfig kernel options menu for Linux. 😉
Great job posting all these Server-Ready driver-installers! :geek: This will surely help many people! 🙂
Can you also post the exception information that appears after crashing or which resides in the Event Log? (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc -> Windows Logs -> Application) This will help people to better pinpoint the problem and possibly give solutions. 🙂
13th July 2011 at 20:07 in reply to: Are the conversion-manual for WS2008-R2 available as pdf or #51696Currently there isn’t any for the R2 manual. For R1, [localurl=memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=58:23f3idm2]DAz999[/localurl:23f3idm2] created a pdf manual probably by copy/pasting the pages one by one to Microsoft Word adding headings and a TOC. If someone has some spare time to create a similar pdf for the R2 version, it would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
Hi Jrockit, welcome at the forum! 😉 It’s indeed useful to see whether there are any problems with certain hardware in combination with Windows Server 2008 [R2] and if there are solutions to fix/workaround it.
See you around! 😎

Hey! That’s a long time ago indeed! 😉
Thanks, living already 23 years in this world 😎
I think the problem you’ve seen has been temporary while they were upgrading the php software or do these warnings still appear?
I sent my webhoster an e-mail this weekend because I wanted to upgrade WordPress to a newer version, however that newer version required the server to have a more recent version of php installed. They probably fixed it past Monday after which I got an e-mail (at 13.00h/GMT+1) that they upgraded the php version. 🙂
Cya!
