You can take a look at %SystemRoot%WindowsUpdate.log, maybe that will give you any clues.
Another possibility is to reset the Windows Update components. This can be done by a tool which is available for Windows 8 but I think will also work on Windows Server 2012: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/
