WINDOWS SERVER 2008 R2 SP1 – “THE $OEM$ PROJECT” – JUNE 2011 EDITION
aka “The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse Project”
We decided at W7V with Fibonacci and Secr9tos to create a $OEM$ folder that will install all necessary packs to get Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Workstation OS.
Till now the only way to do this was either to “sysprep” the release or use RT Server Customization Tool from Ben, involving lots of manipulations and maybe some errors if you are not acquainted with Windows Imaging and Deployment Techniques.
After lots of testing (almost 80 VM tests on all R2 Editions in 1 month) the $OEM$ Folder was ready.
I integrated “this folder” to all editions (Foundation, Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter and Web Server) in the same install.wim file
Works with : Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese-Hong Kong SAR, Chinese-Simplified, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese-Brazil, Portuguese-Portugal, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
You need LP’s for SP1. The old LP’s for R2 SP0 will not work !!!!!
The major improvement of this edition is :1/ It’s not “syspreppred” ! All is done with scripts and batches !
Many thanx to Fibonnaci and Secr9tos for their time and patience !
2/ All W7 Extras to get R2 to look like W7 work with the above mentioned LP’s !
3/ Added K-Lite Codecs, Flash and Shockwave Players, Nightly x64 and IE9
4/ Fixed some dll’s and errors in W7 Packs π π π

Good Morning AsciiWolf !
Thanx for your interest in this project !
π
Tools :
WAIK for W7
WINPE ISO with ImageX on it
A free HDD for installI used following :
– R2 release from Technet
– Added R2 LP’s with DSIM and WAIK (that was very long….)
– Copied System32 and SysWOW folders from W7 releases in FR, DE, ES and ITThen I prepared a System32 and SysWOW64 folder with most of the files needed for transformation to it :
1/ Boot Screen
2/ Welcome Screen
3/ Themes (copied from W7 x64)
4/ DirectX x86 and x64 files
5/ Dreamscene Files
6/ Bluetooth Files (only files so you would just need to run yours *.regs and disable Driver Sig -> BTW I am testing a new approach to that for one our members on W7V)Once that done I installed it on a PC and integrated the rest :
1/ Aero Cursors
2/ Dmusic
3/ Game Controllers
4/ Sticky Notes
5/ Sidebar
6/ Xinput-> all your packs basically
All those with MUI support that you can find here :
http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1226
I tweaked then a couple of things (Password, CTRL+ALT+DEL…..) but no updates !
I also added Features to R2 (Desktop Experience, Framework 3.5 SP1, Wireless Support)
Once that all done, I sysprepped it and captured Image with ImageX to inject it a regular release.
The reason I did this way as that I encountered some problem in creating a setup.cmd that will run just after install. I am able work my way round but no so well in that area.
I am not really a Pro in batch file writing ! π³
I also asked somebody to work on a tool that could be used once R2 installed but no news !
π
If you need anything else let me know.
I can upload for you both System32 and SysWOW64 MUI folders if you want and WIM images with LP integrated but not transformed (to say Regular R2 with LP integrated).
Regards,
ExpertUser π

I had a friend of mine change some registry settings to avoid audio and video stuttering.
The same feature was available for previous Server 2008 SP2 edition but was included in Serv08 Converter.
It’s nothing special but seems to do it.

Did you mean changing the value of “SystemResponsiveness” in the following key “HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionMultimediaSystemProfile” by fixing audio and video stuttering?

I asked my friend about the reg tweaks for audio and video.
He confirmed to me that none were done to both R2 releases here available.
I was very surprised myself about his answer, as we initially wanted to correct some things.
Therefor the I need to know if you encounter Audio and Video problems with the releases.
Your feedback will be appreciated to improve this great OS.
Sorry about that ! π

So I downloaded this yesterday and was trying to install it on my work-station. The actual cd of Windows Server 2008 R2 installs just fine on the machine but when I tried installing this, I got an error half way through the setup that the setup file is corrupted. Any idea what could be causing this?

Hi Zenhic !
I tested the release, and it’s fine. It’s the same release that has been downloaded many times by other members, also on Demonoid and W7V.
Did you burn it low speed ?
Also is setup corrupted or WIM file ?

Hello,
First of all – many thanks for a great job! πI’v installed this image and everything looks to be ok. BUT i have one trouble with MS sidebar.
Then I’m using RDP connection, for some unknown reasons it do not start during system startup.
I can run it manually but still want to solve this issue.BTW. Then I’m not using RDP, sidebar starts during system statup with no issues.
Does anybody has any idea about that?
Thanks,

Yep, I know about this issue.
I don’t know how to fix it. It doesn’t looks like a bug in my installer (missing reg. entries, etc), because I had this issue also in R1. π - 2nd August 2010 at 15:30 #60403Anonymous

My build will have full UX theme patches and dreamscenes and extra eye candy. I will have 3 builds. This shall take me a while though. I got 3 kids to raise and another on the way. Hope they don’t get in the way too much.
One build will be uber mini for better actual server performance.
One will have Uber eye candy and I will make custom UX themes
One will be for gamers and overclockers and people who run GP-GPU stuff.
(I may work on a laptop build at one point)

Good Evening all !
I have v4 finished and ready.
I have made 2 versions of it.
One was done the usual way and the other one was done with Bensam’s Server customization tool.
I decided to do 2 versions so you can compare the editions for yourself and see which one is the best.
Now the question is following :
1/ torrent
2/ file sharing
3/ ftp if any has here
Please let me know.

Yes it is during sysprep process but I did not.
I only integrated once in a release and I do not think it’s a priority.
Also Ascii’s pack will install fine. π

Thanks for the answer.
BTW: It would be very nice to get back MUI’s in the DVD. I by myself know how to make this but I think there are some other people out there …
English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Arabian and Chinese would be a good selection (and perhaps some more until the limit for DVD size is reached)

Hi McS !
I’ll see to get one done very soon with the extra languages you mentioned.
Adding MUI support to Ascii’s and Arris work will take some time. π
I’ll get on MSDN to get the W7 x64 releases that I have missing. π
I’ll post when done.

Work in progress on the MUI release.
It is technically impossible to fix more then a certain number of LP in the release without transforming it into a 10 GB iso. π π π π
So I developed a new approach to make all W7 feature packs (Sidebar, Sticky Notes, Bluetooth, …. well all ) available in all languages. π π π π
I’ll let you know how things proceed.
You can expect a release for the weekend maybe that I’ll make available for private testing. π

it completely safeI agree but the purpose is not to remove anything on the release.
Also there are some issues with the RT Server tool that I have not been able to sort out yet.
The tool works well but it I encountered some problems after using it, some network functions on R2 are not available or are installed and no operationnal, and that makes things a bit problematic when you install Server Software. π―
Ben knows about it and I have a no return on that. π
So I will make the MUI release with the new approach I mentioned earlier, that will make all W7 extras fully working for all LP’s.
Also it remains a Server OS and its roles and features must work all without exception. π
No worries, you’ll like the new version.

If you’re already in post processing stage then forget it, but if you haven’t done that already maybe you can integrate my System Restore fix to the ISO as well. Also implement Arris command-line fix for Windows Easy Transfer if you want as well. I’ll have to partition my drive to test out your ISO, though I must admit I’m a little biased toward R2. Windows 7/R2 is not the perfect role model everybody thinks it is. Flight Simulator X for example took almost 2 minutes load on same hardware that 2008 could do in under 30 seconds. Both 64-bit, equal addons, patches, service pack 2, same number of programs installed. Go figure that out. I’m using a Crysis 1080p dreamscene wallpaper for my 2008 box. Pretty sweet.

Yes it is !
There are no LP’s installed, but all the MUI files from 35 W7 x64 releases for the 35 LP available for R2. π
See 1st post !
This is how it works :
1/ You install R2 in English
2/ Once all done you add the LP you need, let’s say French
3/ Once rebooted you’ll have R2 in French with all W7 Extras working in French language.
And this for all 35 LP’s. π
You can’t slipstream 35 LP in the release, it will be like 10 GB size iso. π
There will be a delay in the release of the version I am going to integrate System Restore and
a fix for Easy Transfer. Please be patient.

Don’t rush yourself. Be absolutely sure you have everything configured the way you want. No matter how much attention to detail you spend tweaking it i can guarantee one thing will be left out that you wanted to do. I’ve done same thing. I installed 2008 got all my roles and features installed, turned off password policy, CTRL+ALT+DEL, whatever and then i realized after I created my backup image i forgot to add firewall exception to ftp to enable public access lol lol … doesn’t it always work out this way? Got the message halladayrules π
Now this how far we are tonight : π
1/ Files for MigWiz from the 35 W7 x64 releases are done π
2/ Files for System Restore from the 35 W7 x64 releases too π
Now I integrated all files in the release but I will not apply the installer. I’ll put it in a separate folder, so the user can decide to use it or not. It will be fully working. π
3/ Files for Bluetooth Stack are also integrated, same issue, I put in the same folder the BT Installer π
4// Games will work with all LP’s too. Same here, the installers for Game_Explorer and Win7Games will be in the folder
Rest of W7 packs will be fully functional as usual.
I think it’s a good deal to have everything available and ready to be used.
Please let me know what you think. π‘

Again, good job!
p.s. Integrate the “gameux.dll” into your ISO.
You can make a lot of games working just by copying (and registering) this dll, without the need to install the full Games Explorer. - 5th October 2010 at 12:44 #60444Anonymous

I will give you my personal review after I have downloaded and installed it. I will seed after I installed (for convenience)! I will copy the .torrent and ISO image to my D: and reinstall uTorrent and seed after I have completed all the updates/patches for windows, plus tweaked it to my liking! π I have a base image install of R2 to go back on so if i don’t like it it won’t be a problem, which I don’t think will be a problem you must a lot of effort into this and I think it deserves some props.

That’s really strange…
I have my bluetooth stack installed on my PC and there’s really no such icon as “People Near Me” in Control Panel.
Also, I see, that collab.cpl and other bthudtask.exe and other Bluetooth-related files are allready integrated in your ISO. Why? If Bluetooth stack is not installed and enabled by default, why did you copy these files?Greetz, AsciiWolf

There is a “People Near Me” shortcut in the Control Panel, but if you try to click it, nothing happens. πWell it’s not really a bug !
I explain why :
It’s comes with the Bluetooth stack you made (collab.cpl) π
Since the stack it’s not really installed and operational, icon in Control Panel is there but not working. LMFAO !

Hi Ascii !
The reason the files are in is because I used the initial System32 and Syswow64 folder I made for a previous version of R2, the one with the 5 LP’s integrated, where everything was set to have also BT working.
Having already 5 languages done I only had 30 W7 x64 releases to go ! π
It’s question of organizing the file integration in the install.wim file.
Basically it does not harm if the files are there, except that there is an extra icon in CPL that in not operational.
Nevertheless I will investigate further to see why it’s there. β β β

Here’s my review.
What I like
– Reduced time needed to fully configure all my settings
– Wireless enabled to begin with. This is great because I don’t have to wait to “configure windows features” for 10 minutes just to start surfing. Bam just click my available access point and begin surfing.
– Dreamscene. Nice to be play able to play some Stargate SG-1 clips in 1080p on my HD monitor
The OS is very polished and you did a very nice job. However there are some improvements to make the configuration tasks more simple.
1. Why not just integrate the entire Games Explorer (gameux + explorer) altogether (if its posisble)? It’s as simple as disabling the Games link in Taskbar and Start Menu property and you don’t have to go through the extra needed steps of enabling it in your tools.
2. I see you used the RT Server Customizer tool and you have the ability to integrate 3rd party applications into the ISO image. Maybe in your next edition you can integrate Adobe Flash Player for IE and Firefox as well as C++ 2008 64-bit SP1 redistributable, Java package, Shark007’s Vista and Windows 7 Codecs. This way you have Media codecs and your machine is “YouTube” ready right out of the box. Another idea I had was taking downloading the INFs of the most recent versions of ATI and Nvidia drivers and integrating them into the ISO so if possible your graphics driver is installed out of the box. I’m not sure if that would work though and you can’t always include every single persons driver so it might not be practical. Nice thought though.
3. Not a fan of the Logon image. I’m not saying I didn’t like the artistic style of the image I just felt it didn’t appropriately match the title of the Windows Edition you gave it. It’s the “Director’s Cut”! Maybe an image of a movie reel in 3D close up might be more suiting?
4. Another little idea of mine, how about changing the default URL page in Internet Explorer when you launch it for first time. By default you are prompted with res://iesetup.dll/SoftAdmin.htm
If you navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain
Change Default_Page_URL to http://www.google.com
Change First Home Page to http://www.google.com
Change DisableFirstRunCustomize to 1.
Change StartPage to http://www.google.comAlso when you open a new tab in Internet Explorer, by default you are greeted with a blank page or a “you’ve opened a new tabs” message if you want to change this action to open your home page every time you open a new tab, do the following:
1. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerTabbedBrowsing
Change NewTabPageShow to 1. Refresh registry. Notice how when you open a new tab in IE it opens your home page.
You can use Yahoo.com is you want or some other search engine. A little tiny step you might want to consider to simplify the configuration process.
Also, on a side (its not exactly legal but who cares I’m going to do it anyway) note, if you install the Standard edition of Windows you can use this SLIC load to activate Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard! Works fine too, even after installing the Windows Activation technologies update in Windows Update. Use at your own risk. In other words, “you didn’t hear it from me” π - 7th October 2010 at 20:15 #60455Anonymous

Thank you halladayrules !
Nice feedback. π
I’ll start from the bottom of the list of thing to change :
1/ I’ll take note of the default homepage for IE and get into the next release. π
2/ gameux.dll is applied in the release, I only did not apply the Game Explorer and W7 Games tool from Arris. I left open the choice for the users whether to install Games or not. Maybe I did wrong. π
3/ I did not use RT Server Customization Tool from Ben. I used the good old sysprep way. I have use Ben’s tool once and encountered some problems with R2 network components. It somehow disables some of them and may cause some trouble if you install Server Software such as Symantec Endpoint v11 and higher. I had secr9tos, our Reverse Engineer over w7v take the OS a part to figure out what happened, but without result. π―
I agree with integrating some programs but then it makes the release bigger and I do not think that it takes so much time to install some Codecs and Firefox. Well that’s my opinion. π
4/ I’ll fix a less flashy Logon for the next one. Maybe someone on here has some good Photoshop skills to fix us a pic for imageres.dll. What you think ?
5/ For the last thing on the loader, I would suggest more uODIN or ODIN from secr9tos to activate the release, let’s say it’s not a loader way it’s a little more elaborate and get your copy activated just like a PC with SLIC 2.1 .
By the way, any idea why we have this “People Near Me” icon in CPL ? π
Thank you for trying out the release and I hoped you liked it.
We will do better on the next one. π

Java, C++, flash, Vista+7 codecs would increase the footprint of the ISO but not by that much more, maybe 300,400MB? I think these 4 things every single PC user will use regardless of the browsing habits. Look now its like this little britches.. all you gotta do is..LOOK FOR THE BARE NECESSITIES!.. the simple BARE Necessities …Forget about your worries and your strife, I mean the bare necessities…Old Mother Nature’s recipes…That brings the bare necessities of life!
If you remove the collab.cpl.mui from WINDOWSSYSTEM32your-system-locale (for example EN-US) does it remove it from visually appearing in Control Panel?

Why not then ! π
I’ll get it fixed for the next one DC02 ! π
By the way, I named the release that way because the other night whiles I was checking it, I was watching Stargate movie but the Director’s Cut (8mn extra). π
For the extra icon, no idea I need to check it out as Ascii said that he has BT stack installed on his R2 and does not have the icon. π

My little opinion: NO integration of third-party applications. If you go this way, the basic philosophy of your releases are … away. And for me it is a paternalism about the applications on my system and has nothing to do with a workstation release by itself.

It stinks theres no way to export my application verifier settings to a file on the hard drive which could be used to implement in your next version of Server 2008 R2, the reason why I ask is if you change the Product Type to 1 in “HighVersionLie” property of Application Verifier you can enable the sleep option in Start Menu as well as change the Logon style to Windows 7 style. I’m referring to when you reboot your machine and as its logging on the little orb thingy spins around with a message saying “Preparing your desktop…” in Windows 7 it just says “Welcome…” you can make it say that when this change.
Refer to my post here for detailed instructions: viewtopic.php?p=7330#p7330
Just repeat the same process for c:windowssystem32winlogon.exe to make Windows Server 2008 R2 start up like Windows 7!
Also on a side note I’d just like to take the opportunity to say.. F**k Google’s “instant search” feature. It’s the most annoying thing on the planet. I keep disabling it but when I clear browser settings for security reasons it defaults back to ON. Stupid google.

I disagree. The idea of converting this into a workstation is to make the process as simplistic as possible. OEMs integrate these highly used 3rd party applications into the OS for this reason I believe. If it pleases everyone else it might be suitable to create two editions. A “barebone” tweaked edition which just includes the bare essentials no 3rd party applications, etc., and a “fully loaded” edition which comes ready to go right out of the box with 3rd party apps and the user can decide to remove applications that they will never use that their own choosing. I’m not saying to go hog wild and start installing personalized applications because then the release becomes less public and more personal-based. What do you think of this idea?

I basically think that we can eventually take in consideration for the next release eventually to make 2 : one with apps and one without. π
All this is positive feedback and this will help to improve it’s quality and content. π
We also need to port Media Center in that case…. π
Let’s keep those good ideas up, I’ll get myself some into this winlogon issue over the weekend.
Will keep you updated. π

In sysprep can you change the unattended answer file to prompt you to enter a new username and password after R2 has finished installing? You know how on a Windows 7 OEM machine when you first buy it and it asks you to set the date and time/regional settings as well as creating your username and password for first time. You can do this I’m pretty sure on sysprep. I’ve done it before messing around with sysprep before. I don’t think anybody will be using the default Administrator account as their primary account. What do you think of throwing this in as well in the next release?

My opinion is to give the basics and then let the user decide to install things and not to remove apps. For me it will be then the same crapware like all the OEM discs and the damn scene releases of Seven.
“Windows Server 2008 R2 Workstation” should be the foundation like a normal clean Seven DVD and not the trash like some OEM’s install on PC’s and notebooks. Because “I” want to decide installing and using a third-party application and not to be forced uninstalling them first to have a clean and personalized system!That’s my opinion!

I agree. But the applications I mention slipstreaming are nowhere near considered bloatware. 99% of everyone who uses a PC needs these apps, so by no means is it considered bloatware. Also the idea of giving users the freedom of whether or not they want to begin with the OS completely skinned or start with a little bit of meat is not a bad idea wouldn’t you say?

I do not think that there would be a problem slipstreaming some Codecs, Java and Flash in the release. π
I do though recognize that I am not a fan of releases with programs already preinstalled as most of the time there is lots of stuff in it that you do not need. π
We could eventually post a new topic with a “little” wishlist for the release or we keep posting on this one and I take note of them at home. What you think ? π

Sounds great. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this program called “Advanced Installer” you can repackage installations into a MSI package. The MSI package can then be silently installed during installation of the OS. For example say you want to integrate Office 2003, but only want to include the three main programs everyone uses. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. You want to exclude everything else. In this program you can run the installation of Office 2003 it will take a snapshot of registry before you make the changes, then you proceed with custom install and it takes snapshot of registry and folder settings afterwords and creates a single MSI package for you to deploy silently. Handy little tool. You can try it for 30 days full feature but its not freeware.

Handy little tool. You can try it for 30 days full feature but its not freeware.

So, I’ve found out that “collab.cpl” (and its registry entries + its mui files) has nothing to do with Bluetooth stack and so is needless in my installer.
So I made a new installer without the “collab.cpl” (and relative files/reg entries).
Big thanks to ExpertUser for pointing me to the right file name! - 8th October 2010 at 17:54 #60469Anonymous

Big thanks to ExpertUser for pointing me to the right file name!Thanx for the new installer Ascii ! π
I’ll remove the extra files in the MUI folders on the weekend. π
For the new release, the issue will be not there.
Also I am currently preparing a complete R2 ISO with ALL versions converted.
It will take some time but it’s worth it. π

Thanks for that nice pack, I searched the thread but nothing to find. Can someone explain why dreamscene is greyed out ? seems like the decoder file isn’t ready ( mpeg2 ) but if I’m correct it should be enabled by default yet
thanks in advance!

It’s normal that it’s greyed out !
You need to select the Wallpaper first from Dreamscene Folder then it will be active.
To select Wallpaper is just like changing Desktop Theme, you need to select Wallpaper Item.
I integrated an existing Dreamscene Wallpaper, so it should work. π

Hi there, ExpertUser! π
I am just wondering on progress and to possibly give a few suggestions and tips out (I haven’t read the entire thread before I made this post (which is bad and I apologize π³ ), so if there is a duplicate, forgive me π³ ) So, here’s the big list :ugeek: :
Suggestions:
* Add every single codec from Windows 7 that you know that can/does work with Server 2008 R2 (that hasn’t been added already within your latest builds ^^ π )
* On top of the first suggestion, After I install an OS on my PC, I always use this following list as a base *after* I install all my drivers and before Windows Updates. Some of these codecs are old, but I install them simply for application compatiblity (Some of these codecs which were removed in Vista/original Server 2008 ^^ ). Here are my list of codecs: Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 Runtime (link: http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb50pro/utility/1/win98/en-us/msvbvm50.exe ), Unreal Runtime Fix 4 (the DLL’s are most important here, and I consider it a “small” incremental update and compliment to Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 Runtime, just delete the “Unreal” folder and the EXE/txt file that’s inside it and keep the DLL files π ^^. Link: http://www.atomicgamer.com/files/19674/unrealedfix4-exe ), Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime 6.0 SP6 (Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=7B9BA261-7A9C-43E7-9117-F673077FFB3C&displaylang=en ), mfc71.dll (I get errors from some apps that this dll is missing in Server 2008 R2, so I always impliment it and the issues go away π ^^ Note: I place in *BOTH* System32 and SysWOW64, although I can’t recall for Server 2008 R2 if one is already in place in one of the folders, but if so, use that one instead of this download link. π If it doesn’t exist at all, then use the link in this post… π Link: http://www.dll-files.com/mfc71.zip?0VKkQEYMdT ), Microsoft C++ 2005 SP1 Runtime (*BOTH* x86 and x64, Links: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displaylang=en & http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=EB4EBE2D-33C0-4A47-9DD4-B9A6D7BD44DA&displaylang=en ), Microsoft C++ 2008 SP1 Runtime (*BOTH* x86 & x64, Links: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=a5c84275-3b97-4ab7-a40d-3802b2af5fc2&displaylang=en & http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=ba9257ca-337f-4b40-8c14-157cfdffee4e&displaylang=en ), Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 (1.0 apparently hates x64 bit OS’s and thinks that when I install it it’s Windows XP Professional x64, and still refuses to install, but I’ll include the download link for users who may find a way of using it in some way. It was ripped off one of my old nLite’d WinXP DVD’s and what not. By running the major EXE’s, as long as your OS is Windows Server 2003 or older, it’ll run. But… extract the EXE’s with WinRAR (or whatever archiver you prefer… ^^ ). Links: http://www.mediafire.com/?5xkbx2d7u46xwxe & http://www.mediafire.com/?lefl8ft7p1fpica ) & finally, although I am not too sure if it’s legal to post it here, but I managed to extract the files I know that contain the Windows 7 RTM WoW16 files (including some registry ^^ ) I don’t get any errors when copying the files and installing the registry, infact, I consider this Alpha/Beta, since I am unsure if it even works, but I install it because I do notice that some older apps run a bit smoother after I install and reboot, but perhaps someone can 100% clarify and perfect this (if it’s legal/safe to do so, that is ^^ π ). Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?g63qp3c8n6d8iki
Tips:
* Turn off Data Execution Protection and make it only apply for core Windows applications, not everything in total (if you have already done this, just pretend that this wasn’t written ^^ )
* Put in games explorer along with the gameux.dll file, this way, both can run together in perfect harmony, and more apps will be compatible. Just my 2 cents. π π
Questions:
* Is it built into Server 2008 R2 about enforcing the password at first logon (aka hard-coded)? If so, it would make sense on why my older version of this workstation build had to do that, along with these new versions from what I see in the pictures in the first post… ^^
* Is it possible that I can be a private tester of this project? π I know I’m asking a lot from ya, but this is the last one anyway, so after this I’ll be quiet and continue peering through the thread silently until something comes up. π ^^
Thank you for reading this, ExpertUser, and hopefully what I wrote can help you along your journey. π Cheers m8!
Edit1: I found several of fixes that might be a good idea to integrate into your iso’s, ExpertUser! π download/file.php?id=262, viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1045&start=0, viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1155 & viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1349&start=0

Hi guys,
I just installed the Director’s Cut on my MacBook Pro 13″ and everything seems to work like a charm. The only problem is that I have a product key for the Standard Edition of R2 (from Dreamspark). And R2 Enterprise does not accept it.
Do you know if I can force it to accept it (downgrade to Standard, change tokens.dat, or something)?
If not, are there any pre-modded Standard Editions around? I don’t think I want to mod it all myself.
Cheers from Oz!

Hi !
You can’t downgrade but you can get it activated with other tools,….such as [s:20x1d1p5]xxx xxxxxx xx xxxx xxxx xxxxxxxx[/s:20x1d1p5] that I prefer since there is no GRUB install but just an OEM driver install.
Still it’s odd because the keys from Dreamspark were initially for Standard and Enteprise.
I hope that will help you.

Thanks ExpertUser.
Unfortunately, nothing seems to work. I got a second product key from Dreamspark and it doesn’t work either. Then I spent over 40 minutes on the phone with Microsoft only to find out that they can’t offer any service for a free product, but I’m welcome to get a consultation for the price of $390. Nearly laughed out loud. Don’t think she likes me anymore…
Thanks for the other suggestions, but I was hoping to have a legal system running. And those tools don’t sound exactly Microsoft approved. π
Do you know if there are any pre-modded Standard editions around? Do you feel like making one? π

Whether the tools are M$ approved or not, they still are valid tools to get R2 activated. But it’s your choice.
There is a Standard release on 1st post it’s version 2 ! It’s works fine.
At the moment I have not released latest R2 WORKSTATION AIO (Foundation, Standard, Enterprise, Data and Web) I made. I did not have the time to upload it. Codename for it is “R2 $OEM$ PROJECT”, I finished it a week ago. π
I am currently working on W7 PACKS FOR R2 – THE APPLICATION – v0.4 x64 to make an extension to it with some extra features.

So I guess I’m just gonna sit here and wait a little till you find the time to upload the AIO (windows is only secondary to me, so I’m in no immediate rush with it), since that one should work for me, right?

It’s awesome!
Works perfectly. Chose to install the Standard Edition and my Dreamspark key worked. I don’t know why, but this version works much better on my MacBook Pro than the Director’s Cut. There I couldn’t get the Mac specific (not quite) F-buttons to work. I mean the display brightness adjustment, keyboard illumination, etc. Especially the lack of a disk eject button was quite frustrating. And yeah, the Boot Camp control panel didn’t work properly so I couldn’t adjust anything.
With this version everything worked straight away, but had some tiny flaws at first (like sometimes I couldn’t switch off the keyboard illumination entirely). Then I installed the brand new Boot Camp update version 3.2 from 9 days ago (which wasn’t yet available when I installed the DC) and now everything is perfect.Like honestly, so far this is the smoothest Windows experience I’ve ever had (reminds me a little of 98SE, hehe…). And that’s on a Mac! π
I only have one question: the Director’s Cut created a Tools folder with some stuff. I don’t really remember what was in it, the only thing I used was the Bluetooth stack, which was quite handy. This version doesn’t have that folder. Is that on purpose? And is that stack available from the Microsoft website? Or did you mod it too in some way?
Many thanks!

cant switch it to german.. :-((
i just know the way to do it over the windows update,but with the Directors Cut there are no optional updates…
pls help..
thx
one more question…
is it possible to install the desktop expierience on a HPC Edition..??
Hi !
Desktop Experience feature is not included in HPC Edition. Also HPC Edition is for big configs.
Better use a regular Enterprise Edition for Desktops and Laptops. πSee here : viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1446
Also in what concerns switching Director’s Cut to German, you need the German LP pack for R2 !!! You need to add it via Regional/Languages in CPL.
There is a DVD from M$ with all R2 LP’s on it.

There is also another way to get R2 Workstation in German !
1/ You need to download a German R2 ISO Trial version from M$
2/ You download then from here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/default.aspx
or LP’s :
All languages :
oem_folder_setupcomplete_runonce_mui_0.4.0.rar
or
oem_folder_setupcomplete_runonce_mui_no_apps_0.4.0.rar
It will convert your German R2 release to workstation automatically.

If you could make this based on the Microsoft Evaluation image instead of TechNet image that would be awesome, as those with serials could just use theirs and those of us just wanting to try things out with the 180-day evaluation could do so.

LOL !
If I am right you are asking when there will be a new release ? π
Well this is the December release.
We actually wanted to wait till R2 SP1 RTM iso’s are out on TN to make a new one.
We’ll add some exta versions to the ISO that will make it like a little AIO. π
I’ll talk with the 4 Horsemen team about it. π

Hi ExpertUser and Happy New Year! π
I have a few ideas to say about the converter…
1. The converter is unpacking its rar file to the directory the converter files are in. It’s a good idea to use %TEMP% instead of this because for example, if you are running the converter from a read-only network location or a CD, it won’t work.
2. Please include the default_aero_cursors.reg script (in the “Tweaks” section). It sets the Aero cursor theme as a default theme for newly created users, and mainly – in the logon screen. - 8th January 2011 at 18:20 #60493Anonymous

Because SP1 is not RTM but RC still.
Also when SP1 will go RTM, M$ will make a R2 SP1 RTM direct, so why not wait and use a release that has it built in.
Of course you can also make your own release, just this the tools posted here : π

I don’t think you understood.
I have a R2 release with SP1 RTM slipstreamed ready but I don’t want to use that one.
I want to use the real release from Microsoft that has Service Pack 1 in it, integrated by Microsoft.
Since it’s not available yet, I’ll wait.
I also would like to check if some W7 Packs need to be updated too.
A small example : uxtheme files for W7 and R2 need to be updated since themeui.dll has a different build number !
Sorry about that, I like nice work done.

I have put together R2 SP1 Workstation release today with the usual 5 releases in it and with te updated packs from Ascii. π
It was made from WZOR leaks releases. π
I am currently testing it and uploading it.
Once upload to FTP finished, I’ll fix a torrent for it on Doid, TPB and 1337x too. π
I’ll post new version when I get the torrent upload started.

Hi there,
First, thanks for this fantastic job and I hope I am posting in the right topic.
Just one issue : I just can’t install the french language with this last SP1 version.
I downloaded the french language pack Windows6.1-KB974587-x64-fr-fr.
When I double click on the exe file I see an lp.cab file during one second or so and then nothing. I spent several hours trying to figure this out but couldn’t.I had no issue with the same procedure for the previous installation I did – on the same PC.
So I guess something is not working any more. Did anybody succeed in installing languages other than english?
Thanks

Hi !
The problem is that you are using LP for R2 SP0, you need LP for R2 SP1 ! π
LP’s are available on
www.wzor.net.
You need to get this release 7601.17514.101119-1850_x64fre_server_langpacks_1-GRMSXLP1_DVD that has FR LP in it.
I posted it on 1st post.
I hope this will help you to sort the issue out.

Make sure you have the following updates installed via this page .
Courtesy: Microsoft
Note: You will need to validate that you have a genuine copy of Windows running before you attempt to install this.
Hopefully this will be all you need to do to get the installation working. A few months back when I tried IE9 beta on my 2008 32-bit machine I did the same process making sure all the preresquites were met. When installing it the progress would get stuck at the q in “Installing required updates…” So what I had to do was go into task manager, find out what process was running this installation, went into to its file location and found the two installation packages which allowed me to install it. A bit messy but hopefully Microsoft has made the installation process much more simple. Read about the way I got IE9 beta installed on my machine by clicking here.

It depends !
Image size is 11 GB about all installed then you need to add pagefile.sys size also and that is set according to your RAM on your PC if you let Windows manage it.
I hope that answers your question.
By the way, image size of each release is on 1st post.

Are you still working on this project?
I’ve downloaded the files via filesonic, but when I try to extract part 2, 7-Zip says the file is broken. Can you please fix it?

R2 is a little “more nervous” even our modded version then a regular W7 x64………..

No idea yet.
We are working on R2Conv3 at the moment, I am also working on R2WS Nemesis Edition.
So it may be one or two month.
We really want to release a new version with R2Conv3 in it and remove previous way of doing the releases.
Lots of testing will be needed although Base Release is ready and most of the themes and mods too.
I’ll keep you updated on how we proceed.

Since I am a little busy lately at work I did not get down to work on a new release.
I do have a custom release somewhere around that has as codename Nemesis but it’s not all done yet.
R2WS Nemesis will serve as kick off for a regular version. I hope it will be before Christmas. As I said somewhere else on the forum, we’ll implement R2Conv3 in both releases so we are going to test them how this all works.
I’ll keep you all updated on how things get on.

Hi ExpertUser and the other horsemen. Thanks for all the hard work and effort.
I just obtained a legit key for Windows Server 2008 R2 and stumbled on this very interesting forum.
I am not a techie but would like to know how much more superior this release of yours is to the stock WHS 2011, which I initially was contemplating on purchasing prior to finding out I was eligible for a Windows Server 2008 R2 product key through dreamsparks?
I have yet to pick up my HP ProLiant and so this is perfect timing.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859107052
Will this machine be enough to run your workstation release? Do you suggest I upgrade the 2GB ECC RAM if I’m only going to use for the activities below and will your workstation be an overkill?
I will only use it as a file server / media streamer / backup tool at home and my level of expertise you can say is ultra basic.
Will I be able to run these: SABnzbd, SickBeard, Transmission and Couch Potato? As well as torrent client (using fake HTTP header)? I don’t think I can do these on WHS 2011 can I?
Will I need a separate display or can I remotely log in to control this server? I plan to leave this system in the basement.
Thank you.

I would also prefer no third-party applications, even if they’re flash and java. I require a special version of java, which means that I’ll have to uninstall the preinstalled java first.

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback to all.
I am afraid that this was the last Server 2008 R2 WS version that we made.
There is not much that we can improve, also there is no point in just releasing the same stuff with different logon screens and/or with or without preinstalled software.
We thought of fixing a custom release with modded icons and other stuff like that, but in a way R2WS needs to remain sober and operational, and not become just some other modded release.
I do not have anything against modded W7 releases or the couple of R2WS custom releases that are around on the web such as the Orion Team Project, but I leave such work to my buddies Neuropass, IiTz ShAnE and Buster67 at Tweakscene or Ben from Rockersteam, that all do awesome releases.
Also Server 2012 will hit RTM mid July and for sure there is lot’s of work there to be done, so even if we do not really like the OS for the moment maybe with combined efforts we can fix it to make it more “User Friendly” and less a Tab OS like M$ wants for now.
Who knows maybe in some months, I will post here again to announce that we may fix a R2WS Millennium Edition….

This is my first time posting here, I came across this site by chance and after reading through some of the work that was put into this I think I’m going to give it a try tonight. I do have a question though, I already have windows 7 setup on an SSD with an HDD for storage, the ssd is just being used for boot priority, If I install this on the HDD will this cause any problems? ( I have made some slight registry changes since a lot of things wanted to point to the 64GB SSD for installation)
on a side note: This seems like amazing work and I can’t wait to try it out.

Hi,
You can install it on a HDD without any issues. You will have a dual boot allowing to select the OS you wish to you use.
Should you be fed up with, simple, format partition where is was installed and run BCDEDIT to remove boot option.
bcdedit>C:UsersAdministratordesktopbcd.txt
to get Boot Menu details and then open bcd.txt to view Server R2 entry that needs to be removed by typing :
bcdedit /delete {numbers and letters for Server R2 entry}
Done.

Is this version already pre-modded to be seen by 3rd party applications as a Windows 7 o/s (Product Type 1, I believe) for installation compatibility or is that a modification that the end user must make? Thanks.

It’s a pre-modded version of a Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition where following was added, installed or removed as I posted on 1st post…..
Works in all 35 Language packs available for R2.
-> Added W7 Boot Screen
-> Added W7 Custom Logons Screens
-> Added W7 Themes from W7 Pro
-> Added Extra M$ Themes-> Installed W7 Aero Cursors
-> Installed W7 Sidebar
-> Installed W7 Sticky Notes
-> Installed W7 Games-> Enabled Windows Audio
-> Enabled .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
-> Enabled Desktop Experience
-> Enabled Themes
-> Enabled Dreamscene
-> Enabled Audio
-> Enabled Wireless Networking
-> Enabled Server Backup-> Disabled IE Enhanced Security Configuration
-> Disabled Complex Password
-> Disabled Password Expiration
-> Disabled CTRL+ALT+DEL at Startup
-> Disabled Shutdown Event Tracker-> Uxtheme has been patched
-> Added msmpeg2enc.dll, msmpeg2vdec.dll and msmpeg2adec.dll for WMP11
-> Added BDA Support-> Added “Take Ownership” to the right-click context menu
-> Added “Copy File Names” to Context Menu
-> Added “Copy To/Move To” to the right-click context menu
-> Added “Open Command Windows” to the right-click context menu-> Integrated Internet Explorer 9
Preinstalled :
* DirectX x86/x64
* Microsoft Silverlight
* C++ 2010 x86/x64
* dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64* K-Lite_Codec_Pack x86/x64
* Java Runtime Update x86/x64
* Flash Player (IE and Non-IE) x86
* Flash Player (IE and Non-IE) x64
* Shockwave Full
* Nightly x64 (Firefox x64 Test Version)So the end user has nothing to do except enter a password.
In poor words the answer is in the 1st post.

I’m wondering if it is possible to apply customization from “JUNE 2011 EDITION” to already installed OS – e.g. launch something from install.vim. I’d like to tweak my win 2008 r2 workstation at work with enhanced user experience – i can’t just reinstall it from this image.

OK.
I suspected that you meant those links, but i wanted to be sure i knew what you were talking about.The mediafire-link seems to be “dead”, i canΒ΄t see any files there.
So i assume you are talking about The Pirate Bay then ?Anyway, since “our” software is available on multiple webbsites i have planned to instead upload all software to one webbsite.
Having eveything in one place would make it easier for everyone.
But i have not had time to do it yet.
Check back in a couple of weeks, it might soon be fixed…. - 16th April 2015 at 16:27 #60560Anonymous

And, for your information: i donΒ΄t even have the actual ISO-file.
That software was compiled by another member, long before i became administrator.
So before i can upload it anywere i have to download it first….. - 16th April 2015 at 16:36 #60562Anonymous
