I noticed that in Vista, DEP is set by default to protect only Windows services whereas in Server 2008, it’s set to protect every program.
Is that setting necessary for a workstation? Of course the system will be safer but it might be slower.
Use DEP to enable programs to run (Thanks Bucket)
I had trouble getting my two favourite image editing programs running on server 08 as a workstation until I adjusted the default settings in DEP – Data Execution Prevention. DEP can be found by right clicking My Computer – Properties – Advanced system settings – Advanced – Performance Settings – Data Execution Prevention.
Select the top radio button – Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only.
