Virtual machines and networks ?

  Hi !
  
  Any experts on virtual machines and networking here ?
  
  Scenario: a lab with 2 PC´s, #1 running W7, #2 running Linux.
  #1 is used for network commands, monitoring, and communicating with #2
  
  Would it be possible to use only 1 PC, and install Linux in a virtual machine with fx. VmWare / VirtualBox on #1 ?
  Can the main system communicate with the virtual system, will network commands work ?
