Maybe you can a bit more specific about the hardware you are using? You can find information about your hardware using the Lavalys Everest tool mentioned in Method 2 of the Installing Drivers Tutorial. It is also possible that your motherboard drivers aren’t installed or not the most recent if you get performance issues like you have. An other possibility is the lack of performance some people experience after you installed Hyper-V.

I am running an 8800 GTS and I just used the Vista 64 drivers….works great. I would recommend that you identify your video card and then download the Vista version of the driver for it…most seem to work. Just be sure to match the version of the driver to your OS (32 vs 64 bit).

I don’t want to start a new thread on my NVidia problem.
When I view a JPG or any individual picture file, its as if the video driver outright fails. Basically the screen goes blue with lines and dots. I can hit CTRL Alt Delete a few times to get back to a viewable screen, but the only way to get through it is to log out and back on again. The problem does not happen when there is no NVidia driver installed. My video card is the 7900GT running on the 64 bit version of Server 2008. I installed the latest version of the driver, and went back 1 version also but had the same problem.
Any suggestions?

This problem has been resolved.

Don’t take this wrong (especially since I’m new here), but I think it would be more informative for others if you explained how exactly you solved this issue. ๐
It might be crucial information to me as well, since I’m also running a NVidia card. ๐

Hi, also new here.
I have a 2 * Xeon Quad core processors with a Nvidia GeForce 8600GT – have the latest drivers installed. All updates are done on the server.
All screen scrolling – even this site – is very jerky – inconsistent. Same goes for Excel 2007, Vista Snipping tool etc.
Soon as I stop the Theme service – all is 100% – scrolling sites and moving between programs – perfectly normal.
Any ideas?

It looks like you have the same problem climber has: Excel 2007 auto refresh issue…ATI Mobility Radeon x300. Could therefore be a hardware independent problem?

I actually built out a new machine. Everything was new with the exception of the video card. The old card was PCI Express 1.0 and the new board was PCI Express 2.0. I bought a new card and everything went away. User error that I was not admitting!

Yeah, same problem ๐ Scrolling in any browser is produces big lags when aero enabled.
For a test I installed Vista 32bit on the same machine and scrolling is very smooth, and my graphic card gets 5.9 aero points…
My sys: Win 2008 64bit, nForce 4 Ultra, 2GB ram @ 1000MHz, Athlon X2@3000MHz, GeForce 8800GT, all motherboard and graphic drivers installed, all tweaks from wint2008workstation.com applied.
Did ANYONE solve this problem other than by exchanging a graphic card?? - 18th December 2008 at 07:11 #47492
any problems with GPU-Z and sensors for an nvdia 9800GT? my second pc I just got last week does not sense the temperature correctly with my nvidia 9800GT.

I have a similar problem using Intel Core 2 QUAD and Nvidia 8600GT – latest nvidia beta drivers (just in case it was fixed in the beta).
My window scrolling problem (same as yours) was fixed by changing to the Vista basic theme.

I’m not sure how widely known this is – but the latest installments of nVidia drivers have ditched older versions of OpenGL. When I try to play City of Heroes (fav game right now) it crashes since City of Heroes requires an older version of OpenGL to run.
Because of this game – I think I found a solution. I installed my favorite drivers from a year ago that are supposed to support all the native programming calls that City of Heroes uses with OpenGL – version 169.25. Strangely – my scrolling stuttering problem stopped too!!
So my guess is, something in the newer driver releases isn’t happy with the Aero interface that S2008 uses… perhaps it has something to do with a lack of updates for the desktop experience, vs Vista that has gotten updated? I can use any version of drivers in Vista x64 and not have this problem… but I have to use drivers from a year ago to get good performance out of S2008 with the Aero theme enabled.
So in short – uninstall your current drivers, run a good driver cleaner of your choice, and then install 169.25 (or some perfer 169.44) and enjoy S2008 with an nVidia card.
For 32bit OS users (WHY ARE YOU STILL USING 32BIT?!):

For future attempts – I’ve had much better luck with stability using 169.44 instead of the .25… even though .25 was WHQL and .44 was beta – .44 just plain works….
Hope this helps!

Great!!!!!!!!!!! ๐ ๐
It worked! I am running 169.25_forceware_winvista_64bit_english_beta from your post (it in not WHQL singed!) and scrolling is very smooth!
Thanks. - 7th January 2009 at 21:35 #47498
I have an 8800GT on Standard x64. For some reason, I can’t get some advanced Aero options working like “show window previews” on the taskbar. Maximize/minimize animations are off, too. I downgraded to 169.25_forceware_winvista_64bit_english_beta and that doesn’t help.
Found the solution:

Itโll test your video hardware and enable the Aero optionAll effects work perfectly now!

Where did you get winsat on 2008 x64??? Are you still using a beta or something? Mine doesn’t have winsat, and it appears it’s a common problem as the Wiki’s are in debate over whether it really comes with server or not. Some say it doens’t – why would this be?
Can you list the roles and features you have installed? Did you download anything else extra to get winsat?
Thanks in advance!

Here you go, gleep. Do everything in this quote first, then run the command line I posted.

Nice job douken! Works great! After your post I got some more insight about how the Windows Experience Index works and found out how to get the “Performance Information and Tools” item in the Control Panel working. However, if I click on the “Rate this computer” button I get the following error: “Windows was unable to calculate the Windows Experience Index because the user cancelled the assessment”. I couldn’t get around this one (yet). Maybe someone else has some ideas? Hope we can merge the information to get the GUI version of the Experience Tool working!
Performance Information and Tools in Windows Server 2008 Error
Instructions
1. Download the WinSAT_VistaSP1_v2.zip (4,87MB) file and extract the contents of the folder of your Windows architecture to C:WindowsSystem32.
2. Click Run in the Start menu, enter regsvr32.exe PerfCenterCPL.dll and click OK.
3. Now you have the Performance Information and Tools icon in your Control Panel, but the Rate this computer button is not working…Enjoy ๐
