Windows 8, including the desktop experience, has only a few codecs and the DVD decripter has been removed or (as it seems) deactivated. I have found a program that includes, it seems, all the codecs, including the DVD function. So, besides WMP, this replaces virtualy all the rest : Real Player, VLC, Quicktime, Media Player Classic etc. It is called SMPlayer, it is based on MPlayer. On Softpedia I have even discovered a x64 version. It works better on my W 2012 instalation than any other media player.
