Hi everybody!
I’m trying all gamessimRTS that I have on my workstation with Windows Server 2008 R2.
Here is a list (I will update during these days).
Legend: Works – Works with workarounds – Doesn’t work
Operation Flashpoint CWC/Resistance – 1.96 update
ArmA: Armed Assault – 1.16 Beta Note: Patch 1.16 is important for 4GB+ and ATI users
Armed Assault 2
Theatre of War 1.081
Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942
Medieval Total War 1 / Viking Invasion
Stalker Clear Sky Note: Remember to install the last patch
WWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs Tiger Note: Too many problems (sound etc etc)…And, the software house that made this game went bankrupt…so no updates.
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl
[s:2ls4e0ya]Silent Hunter III[/s:2ls4e0ya]
Rome Total War – Barbarian Invasion – Alexander Note: There’s no problem during installation. With Xp x64 / Server 2003 x64 and x86 you had to save cd image and then install. With Server 2008 R2 no problem.
[s:2ls4e0ya]rFactor 1.255[/s:2ls4e0ya]
[s:2ls4e0ya]Red Orchestra OstFront 41-45[/s:2ls4e0ya]

Nice list with useful notes! π Keep up the good work!
- 24th August 2009 at 12:26 #48854
I’d just like to say that Crysis 32-bit works fine.
I couldn’t test 64-bit because, well, it’s a long story why, but I have to install it from an external hard drive and have no actual DVD for the game, so I have to use a no-cd patch and as far as I know, there are none for 64-bit.
Note: I in no way pirated the game. I paid the full $50 when it came out.

You can add the following to working list:
World of Warcraft: Wrath of Lich King:
NOTE: Before I added Remote Desktop Server role, it was running fine. After the change
I needed to run WoW in vista compatibility mode. It also runs fine in this mode.Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
Call of Duty: World at War
NOTE: Vista compatibility mode.Medieval II: Total War, Kingdom
- 9th September 2009 at 20:40 #48857
Thanks. I will add it to the first post so I can add it to the main table later.

The following games work fine:
World of Goo
Osmos
Dyson
UltraStar Deluxe
Need for Speed – Porsche Unleashed 2000
Monopoly by Parker Brothers - 21st September 2009 at 20:00 #48859

How did you get fable working?! I tried everything and no go! Even tried direct off the disc, made a virtual dvd drive for it, installed with compat. modes, disabled vistual themes, tried installing as compat mode… nothing ever worked. it would install ok but would not load the game. let me know how you got it working so I can get my disc back from my brother whom I let use since I gave up on getting it working.
- 5th October 2009 at 09:50 #48869
I didn’t do anything special to it, it just installed and worked right out of the box.
How far did you get when loading the game? Did you see the intro videos? Did you get an error or something?
- 5th October 2009 at 23:49 #48870
not even the intro vids! Double click the game exe and poof it crashes with the usual “fable.exe has stopped responding….” stuffs. Even took DEP off of it, did all the compatibility stuff and nada. even reinstalled. nothing. π bwe π
- 6th October 2009 at 01:25 #48871
RemixedCat, are you on R2 because your signature says Windows Server 2008 x64 SP2? And does your computer meet the criteria for the game (eg: can you run it on a different OS on the same hardware?)
If R2 lets you get the Error details, could you post them? I know on XP if it said “Game.exe has close unexpectedly…would you like to send an error report [Send Report] [Don’t Send] [View Details]” and if you click view details and maybe “To see what this report contains, click here.” or something it may tell you. Not sure if it is in Vista/7 and Server R1/R2.
- 6th October 2009 at 04:49 #48872
nah, I’m on R1 SP2…. I have a R2 VM but I cant play games on it since they GFX driver don’t work right for games on VMware. and my R2 VM is a little messed up since I was testing windowblinds and blackbox and other stuff on it. I gotta redo my R2 VM and i haven’t had much time to do it lately. I’ll let you know if I have the time to play with R2 more. I am NOT using it as my fulltime OS for a long time. I am happy with R1 as it is. π
- 6th October 2009 at 17:14 #48873
Have you tried asking in the R1 subforum? I quickly checked the games list there, and apparently Fable works fine under R1, but at any rate you’re more likely to get advice there than here, seeing as most people here run R2.

Ah yes, if you’re content with playing it at 640×480, with 8-bit colours, then the default installation is fine. I prefer my laptop’s native resolution (1280×800) and 16-bit colours, and I now have both working that way, without compatibility mode or resolution restrictions.

There is no restrictions really because 640×480@8-bit is native mode for fallout 1-2.

yeah i did. i guess we need a patch/fix for 2008R2’s Parental Controls.
I also tried running in compatibility mode = nada. - 8th February 2010 at 22:31 #48903
I had a conversation with a reverse engineering assembly hacker about the Stalker CoP parental check, and I got this working pctrlchk.dll in return! Place it in the game’s /bin folder.
Here’s his documentation on the hack.
At the beginning of the pctrlchk function (100012E0) change
100012E0 > 81EC 30080000 SUB ESP,830
into
100012E0 > B8 01000000 MOV EAX,1
100012E5 C3 RETNIf you’re curious, that’s basically something like this in C:
int pctrlchk(void)
{
return 1;
}Problem solved. π

well, seems to do the trick but i get an error :

Also, are there any other issues? If the inability to host LAN games or to Alt-Tab out of the game are the only issues, I wouldn’t label it as incompatible.
- 3rd March 2010 at 22:17 #48909
CTD = Crash to desktop.
I think there is still a save game issue where save slots cannot be used more than once in game (it will say it saved but doesn’t actually overwrite anything) so when all save slots are full the save games must be manually deleted in explorer to continue to save. I still have to check if compatability mode fixes this problem.
The multi-player issue is a fairly large one as LAN is the only way to play multiplayer at all. The WON service the game depended on for internet games is long dead, so Hamachi or other VPN + LAN is often the only way to play with others.

Yes, but I assume the game also has a single-player mode? “Not compatible” usually means major issues like the game refusing to start, or even install. Not being able to use a subset of the game’s features that doesn’t necessarily appeal to everyone isn’t, IMHO, a major issue.

Man it would be nice to someday organize all this together into some form of database with user input. I was thinking of something you could embed on the website that would allow a person to search for a particular game title relating to their particular system and they would get results pertaining to only their OS. We could have a rating scale of what you thought of the game and whether or not it required a patch. Another good idea would be to add a confirmation option to confirm whether or not the game has worked for several other people. It is possible somebody got it to work, but skipped a step on how they got the game to work (installed C++, directx for example). It would be like a drop down table where you would select your system (2008 32-bit, 2008 64-bit) and a keyword relating to the game… so if you typed in “battlefield” you would query results such as “Battlefield 2” “Battlefield 2142” “Battlefield Bad Company 2” and then compatibility and ratings systems associated with that game. Also another cool idea would be for win2008workstation users to add their own input with new titles/games that would be automatically updated into the database and available for searching if anyone requests it. For example when Battlefield 3 comes out, if I type in “Battlefield 3” in the search box it will query just created moments ago by the win2008workstation user who provided the compatibility review! .. Argh but lots of scripting required. And too much headaches. π
The closest we can get right now is to just manually type in the name of the title in the search box above in the upper right corner of the forum. Be nice to collaborate all of this hard work together but it will probably never happen.

It seems that the new games featuring games for windows live do not work, like Fable 3 and Dirt 3. Is there a workaround?
Although the redist package installs fine the game doesn’t recognize the installation of G4WL and wont start at all π³ (tried with Fable 3).Also tested and working with no issues;
Alice Madness Returns

Just figured I’d pitch in my 2 cents on what games have worked for me on R2, and some workarounds as well. I havent found any games that dont work, so far, R2 has turned out to be a much better gaming machine for my laptop and i have even noticed that in some games my FPS is higher, probably due to how R2 utilizes system resources. But anyways, on to my list:
Final Fantasy VII (Not the Ultima Edition, which is the pirated version, although I suppose it would work too): works, you can try copying the Movies from each disc onto your hard drive and then editing your Registry to reflect the new location (There is also a tool called FF7MovieDir which can change the Registry location for you, i recomend it over manually changing, find it at http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12305.0), a no-cd patch is also recommended. For increased performance and to play in windowed mode try Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver. You may also need to install the TrueMotion video codec, or just install the K-Lite Codec Pack. Also make sure to update to v1.02. Add ff7.exe and FF7Config.exe to DEP exceptions list.
Final Fantasy VIII: Works without issues, try copying the following files from each disc to hard drive (DISK1/DISK1.PAK, DISK2/DISK2.PAK, DISK3/DISK3.PAK, DISK4/DISK4.PAK, and FIELD.FI, FIELD.FL, FIELD.FS, FIELD2.FS,). No cd crack recomended, update to latest version, and Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver for increased performance and windowed mode. You can also try D3D Windower for windowed mode. You may also get an error like “cant find MIDI device” when starting FF8.exe or FF8Config.exe, i’m not sure how to solve this, but maybe a codec pack will do the job, otherwise the game should start fine with sound working.
Final Fantasy XIV Online: Working, no issues
Fallout/Fallout 2: Working, only issue I have found is that the colors are somewhat messed up/display incorrectly, there is a tool called w7ddpatcher, get it at http://vogons.zetafleet.com/download.php?id=7984&sid=26b2f272041debfdfff191865d415c76. this should correct the color issues, also the installer colors will display incorrectly, this will not prevent install, but you should be able to figure out how to get around this.
Fallout 3 and all downloadable content: Working, no issues
Fallout – New Vegas and all downloadable content: Working, no issues
Fallout Tactics : Brotherhood Of Steel: Working although you may have issues with discoloration, w7ddpatcher linked in this post might help
Age of Empires and Rise of Rome Expansion: Working, no issues, try using the w7ddpatcher linked above to correct color issues, and make sure to patch to latest version
Age of Empires II : Age of Kings, and Age of Empires II : The Conquerors Expansion: Working, no issues, also try using the w7ddpatcher listed above to correct color issues, and make sure to patch to latest version
Age of Empires 3 and Warchiefs/Asian Dynasties expansions: working, but make sure to install MSXML 3.0 Service Pack 3, then use Windows Update to update that, otherwise you will get an error during install. Also, patch to latest version. You may also find that you get no music playing ingame and at the menus (R2 only, Windows 7 isnt affected), try installing K-Lite Codec Pack to fix this
Age of Empires Online: Working, no issues
Grand theft Auto (Rockstar Classics version, free download): Working, download GTA 1 Launcher (http://gzwn.net/gta1launcher/) to fix issue with PLAYER_A.DAT file, otherwise game will crash everytime after first run
Grand Theft Auto 2 (Rockstar Classics version, free download): Working, go to http://www.win2008workstation.com/win2008/get-gta2-working-in-windows-server-2008 for DirectX Fix
Grand Theft Auto 3: Working, apply latest patch, get no cd patch, and copy Audio folder and all other files from the Audio disc to the install directory
Grand Theft Auto – Vice City: Working, apply latest patch and no cd patch, add to DEP exceptions list
Grand Theft Auto IV: Working (although the game is known to have many, many issues regardless of the OS it is running on)
Grand Theft Auto (IV) – Episodes From Liberty City: Working (although the game is known to have many, many issues regardless of the OS it is running on)
Dragon Age – Origins and Dragon Age Origins – Awakening, and all downloadable content: Working, no issues
Dragon Age 2 and all expansions/downloadable content: Working, no issues
Duke Nukem 3D: Working, use eDuke32 to run the game since the executable is 16 bit, also can try DOSBox
Duke Nukem Forever (vaporware for 12 years, lol): Working, no issues
Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3D: Working, no issues, except that the 16 bit installer doesnt seem to run on 64 bit Windows (the game itself is 32, only the installer is 16 bit). Go to http://www.markusegger.at/Software/Games.aspx to download a tool that will create a 32 bit MSI installer that will let you install the game. Also update to 1.3 and apply no cd patch
Call of Duty Black Ops (Steam and retail): Working, no issues
Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (Steam and retail): Working, no issues
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Steam and Retail): Working, no issues
Portal 2 (Steam and retail): Working, no issues
Civilization 4 and all expansions: Working, no issues
Civilization 5 (Game Of The Year edition) plus all downloadable content (Steam and retail): Working, no issues
Dungeons and Dragons: Daggerdale (Steam and retail): Working, no issues
Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited: Working, no issues
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm: Working, no issues
Warcraft III plus Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne expansions: Working, no issues
Battlefield 3: Working, no issues
Command and Conquer: Tiberian Twilight: Working, no issues
Command and Conquer: The first Decade (which is a compilation of most of the the C and C games): Some of the games have issues running on 64 bit Windows, apply all official patches. Also, apply all unofficial patches that are available (Google to find them), w7ddpatcher can also fix any discoloration issues
The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind plus Bloodmoon and Tribunal expansions: Working, no issues
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion and all downloadable content: Working, no issues
The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim (Steam and retail): Working, no issues
Mass Effect 2: Working, no issues
Neverwinter Nights plus Hordes Of The Underdark, Shadows Of Undrentide, And Kingmaker expansions: Working, no issues
Neverwinter Nights 2 plus Storm Of Zehir, Mask Of The Betrayer, and Mysteries Of Westgate expansions: Working, no issues
Baldur’s Gate plus Tales Of The Sword Coast expansion: Working, no issues
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter: Working, no issues
SimCity 4 Deluxe edition (plus Rush Hour): Working, no issues
Splinter Cell (original): Working, no issues
Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow: Working no issues
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: Working, no issues
Well, that’s it for now, if anyone has any questions on what i’ve posted (or disputes to any of my claims), then just post and i’ll try to answer.
I do ask that these games be added to the list with notes, if some of them arent already there. i didnt check the list, this is just an incomplete list of games that i have found to run on R2. I have all of them installed and working properly, have tested as much as i can.
Will update this list if necessary.

Made a separate topic for it, but I thought I would add it here too,
Batman: Arkham City and a few others that conflict with Structured Exception Handling Overwrite Protection (SEHOP) need this registry entry:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionImage File Execution OptionsBatmanAC.exe]
“DisableExceptionChainValidation”=dword:00000001Credit over here: http://community.batmanarkhamcity.com/forums/showthread.php/10517-Crash-on-launch?p=179953#post179953
You could also disable SEHOP.

Although the redist package installs fine the game doesn’t recognize the installation of G4WL and wont start at all π³ (tried with Fable 3).Game: Dirt 3
Compatible?: Yes
Issues: Game crashes before race, DSS fails to launch (Appcrash)
Fix: Change audio setting from Rapture3D to software. Must disable SEHOP –Disable SEHOP:
run regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Managerkernel
remove DisableExceptionChainValidation and DistributeTimersNotes: Found out about the Rapture audio crash issue on another forum. I’m not sure if it’s specifically related to Realtek sound or if it’s global. Not sure if DEP must be off or not. I disabled it long ago, so I don’t know if having it on would make a difference. I had no problem installing Dirt 3 or any problems with GFWL. But I use an offline profile.
Thanks to Allukend for the SEHOP fix. He also claims it works for Fable 3. Don’t have Fable 3, so I can’t test. I started a separate thread for Dirt 3 – Dirt 3 thread
Game is crashing to desktop upon loading a race.

Hi !
After some research i found info saying that installing DirectX 9 and doing some hacking solves the problem.
You need to copy an older version of opengl32.dll from system32 to the MOHAA-folder.
But how to do i get the “right” version of opengl32.dll ? - 22nd January 2013 at 19:23 #48938
Has anyone run Myst 5 End of Ages on Server R2? It’s the one I haven’t played since XP and am missing it very much.
