I have 2008 Server 64-bit. Works great. How can I install extras like Dreamscape?

I think you mean Windows DreamScene, the video-as-background feature. I haven’t tried it at Windows Server 2008 yet but you might try one of these links:
* My Digital Life: Set Dream Scenes Videos as XP Background Wallpaper with BS.Player
* My Digital Life: Enable DreamScene Video Wallpaper in Windows XP and non-Ultimate Vista
* Winmatrix Forums: Use your screensaver as a wallpaper in Windows Vista and emulate the look of Windows DreamScene or Desktop Aurora.You can also try if you can get the “Vista Ultimate Extra’s DreamScene” working on Windows Server 2008; here are the direct links for the .cab files:
*x86: windows6.0-kb933713-x86_bc5b6ea7ca13e198c8248a37a7bdc76e270f489d.cab (22.1MB)
*x64: windows6.0-kb933713-x64_f2cb03b4d3084e6f4126f30dfe4e2669efbf4fcd.cab (22.4MB)Hope this helps you a bit!

I tried the 64-bit version of Dreamescene and it is working. Very nice and almost no resources!!

where do you put that cab file? I downloaded the 64 bit version of Dream Scene that you linked too and would like to get it working in server 2008 standard 64 bit.

I figured out how to get these cabs working in Windows Server 2008. This weekend I’ll add a tutorial to the manual how to get Vista Ultimate Dreamscene into Windows Server 2008 x86 and x64. :geek:

It would be nice to see the solution … 😉

hope this can be done without very much hacking and slashing. oh and no reboots. rebooting this takes I am not kidding 8 minutes. I dont know why but it does dont ask… LOL.

Okay, here is a quick guide. I’m still working on a new page for the manual but currently I’m very busy with my internship and with school.
For clarity I removed the crap in the filenames.
I will use the x64 cab as example, but if you replace the amd64 by x86 it works for 32bit too. Haven’t tested the x86 replacement but I expect it ‘ll work fine. Please report it!
Download and extract the Dreamscene cab.
1. Download windows6.0-kb933713-x86.cab or windows6.0-kb933713-x64.cab, depending on your computers’ architecture. (I will use the filenames without the crap for clarity)2. Start the Commant Prompt, cd to the folder of the cab and execute the following commands: md dreamscene and expand windows6.0-kb933713-x64.cab -F:* dreamscene.
Get the files we need. (I copied them to a separate folder)
3. Open the folder using Windows Explorer and get:
* dreamscene.dll.mui from the amd64_microsoft-windows-dreamscene.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16504_en-us_cfd925896001c0c0 folder
* dreamscene.dll from the amd64_microsoft-windows-dreamscene_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16504_none_0df9395839f9ee31 folder
* themecpl.dll.mui from the amd64_microsoft-windows-themecpl.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.20557_en-us_e958b676222c7a22 folder.
* themecpl.dll from the amd64_microsoft-windows-themecpl_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16456_none_50d5a0c6c1cec3da folder.Remove the Vista Ultimate check
4. Open dreamscene.dll in a Hex Editor like Hex Workshop and find/replace the following Hex values (Edit -> Replace). After that save the file.
For x64
0F8837010000 -> 909090909090
0F881E01000083 -> 90909090909083
0F8413010000 -> 909090909090For x86
83EC148365 -> 33C040C9C35. Copy the files:
* Dreamscene.dll.mui and themecpl.dll.mui to %windir%system32en-US
* Dreamscene.dll and themecpl.dll to %windir%system326. Import the following .reg file:
Free Text Host: dreamscene.reg.7. Kill and restart explorer.exe (no need to restart, RemixedCat! ;)) or reboot your pc.
8. Now go to the Properties of your desktop and select a DreamScene video!
Sites to download Dreamscene video’s
* dreamscenevideo.net
* dreamscene.orgIssues I encountered:
* I couldn’t play .mpg files because of the missing codecs. I installed several codecpacks but apparently they don’t contain the mpeg2 codec. Vista uses the msmpeg2vdec.dll file which I couldn’t get working (yet) in Server 2008. Maybe someone has a solution for this?
* After using remote desktop, my desktop background is black when logging in normally again. Then I have to re-select the dreamscene video to get it working again. - 28th March 2009 at 22:56 #48342
thanks for the guide – it works properly
one question: does anyone knows why the wmvs stops after a few minutes? I know they repeat a few times, but then … they stop 🙁
Also I know: They stop if i view fullscreen apps and then they repeat
and second question:
is there a way to strech the video to both tfts ? because i use dual monitoring hehe
thankz alot!

I’ve tried to regsvr32 follow files:
regsvr32 msmpeg2vdec.dll
regsvr32 msmpeg2adec.dll
regsvr32 msmpeg2enc.dllI have copys from Vista Ultimate system32 and syswow64
but regsvr says error in modul
hope we finde a solution, but I have no idea who we can start to solve it
edit:
little update, i told a friend with vista ultimate to collect all reg entrys with msmpeg2vdec.dll
I have imported all entrys in my registry only these 2 keys cant be imported ( maybe reg protect or in use … ) :
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionComponent Based ServicingComponentDetectamd64_microsoft-windows-msmpeg2vdec_31bf3856ad364e35_0.0.0.0_none_10efd5f6b889b531]
"Package_23_for_KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.18000.936330-37_neutral_GDR"="6.0.6001.18000@16"
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionComponent Based ServicingComponentDetectx86_microsoft-windows-msmpeg2vdec_31bf3856ad364e35_0.0.0.0_none_b4d13a73002c43fb]
"Package_23_for_KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.18000.936330-37_neutral_GDR"="6.0.6001.18000@16"
I think, if the regsvr32 failed, the way by original reg entrys from vista would be okay but i had no luck =(

The DreamScene video should be repeated eternally and for me it also does. Try some other wmv files because it should work fine!
Just attached a second monitor to my pc to test Dualscreen-DreamScene and it works fine. I expanded my desktop to the other screen so I got one screen with Start-bar and icons with a moving DreamScene video and on the other screen I just had an empty desktop with that video again. Looks exactly like the following movie: MSN Video: DreamScene on Dual Monitors.

You are right about that. I think this has to do with Licensing issues. If you look in the C:WindowsSystem32licensingppdlic folder on a Windows Vista system and compare it to that folder in Windows Server 2008 you ‘ll see that the following files are missing in Server 2008:
* msmpeg2adec-ppdlic.xrm-ms
* msmpeg2enc-ppdlic.xrm-ms
* msmpeg2vdec-ppdlic.xrm-msWhen executing the regsvr32 file.dll command in fact it just executes the exported DllRegisterServer function within the dynamic link library. Executing rundll32 file.dll,DllRegisterServer will have the same effect. It looks like in that the DllRegisterServer function and functions that executing while using the codecs contain checks whether you have the license to install/use the msmpeg2 audio- and videocodecs. Couldn’t find out (yet) how to circumvent these checks… 😕
It should be possible to find out using IDA Dissasembler or any other dissasembler application but I’m not yet that experienced to find it… Maybe someone else can try it or have alternative codecs?
